Britain's Got Talent.

01-Jul-09 19:42

With the retirement of Joe Calzaghe and with questions still surrounding the future of Rick Hatton it may be time for a new superstar to emerge from the British Isles. Despite only having one world champion currently Carl Froch the talent within Britain’s ranks is still rich, so I ask which of the current crop of prospects can push themselves to the front of the queue in the long line of would be superstars?

Firstly there is Amir Khan who many may already see as a superstar, although Khan somewhat polarizes opinion he possesses all the tools to become a superstar if he can avoid having his chin checked again like in the Presscott fight. The 22 year old already sells out arenas, has fast hands, knock out power and within a few weeks could be a world champion in one of the hot divisions in world boxing. So if all goes right for the Bolton native he could be and probably is the odds on favourite to become Britain’s next superstar.

Another Candidate is the British and Commonwealth Super Featherweight champion Kevin Mitchell, who unlike Khan has not been fast tracked and made a name for himself by beating some of Britain’s best. The Dagenham born Mitchell holds a 28-0-0 record and if all goes to plan could be challenging Roman Martinez for the WBO’s version of a world title very soon. The 24 year old like Khan can dig and possesses fast hands, however unlike Khan his chin is made of sturdier stuff, so if this young man can continue his progress could he be the next superstar?

Two other up and comers who are receiving rave reviews are welterweight Kell Brook 19-0-0 and Light heavyweight Nathan Cleverly 16-0-0. The Ingle trained Brook has looked particularly impressive cutting a swath through the British welterwight scene and looks set to challenge for European honours in the near future. While Cleverly is really growing into the role of Wale’s leading hope for future world titles, the youngster’s power and silky skills have been on show in his recent defences of his Commonwealth title. However have these two got enough to go all the way and become Britain’s next Hatton or Calzaghe only time will tell?

Other future candidates are the Olympic trio of James Degale, Billy Joe Saunders and Frankie Gavin who have made somewhat predictable but lively starts to their careers. While in Ireland there is possibly the best Olympic prospect in Darren Sutherland who at 27 is being moved along rather quicker than his counterparts.

While these few boxers are some of my tips, feel free to weigh in on the subject of who you feel will be Britain’s next superstar?

Also not forgetting...
corryaiden
corryaiden: Good post, yeah the future does look bright for british boxing, just need the tv companies to put a bit of faith in them.

Anyway, Has anyone seen that big scouser David Price. I seen his debut and he looked really powerful. It would be an interesting fight between price and fury when they both get a few wins under their belt.

I also like the look of the welter weight Paul McCloskey. Hes a tidy wee boxer. Would like to see him step up in opposition.

good question!
The Chief
The Chief: In my opinion this is how I see it;

firstly Amir Khan, all will be revealed in the coming weeks with this fighter, he had great speed & power but as you say the glass chin is the downfall, can someone who gets taged once and hits the canvas really be a superstar, I dont think so! against champions he WILL get tagged & will hit the deck. Even if he gets past Kotelink he will surely be smashed by the likes of pacman & maquez.

Kevin Mitchell, great fighter but does he posses the X factor?? myself I dont think so, would he excite the US audience?? possibly, we just dont know until he fight a top name!

Kell Brook, I have only seen him fight one time, he won convincingly but it was agains a bum who he knocked out within 3 rounds! so I am unable to comment. & I have not seen Nathan Cleverly fight!

Out of the Olympians I think Frankie Gavin has the best chance, he has great speed & power for his size & I know he has a great chin! (&he is a fellow brummie) De Gale I am unsure of? does he have the power up at middleweight? he sure has the mouth!
I have not seen a lot of Billie Joe but have heard he is good!

The one fighter you have overlooked is David Haye ! this guy could be great! if he does beat one of the Klitchco's he is game on! we all know his power is unrivalled in any division * I personally think he will win as soon as he lands one of them bombs!

Also another fighter which could shake things up in the heavyweights is Tyson Fury! he is a beast !

all in all we have prospects coming through, its just that until they fight champions we dont know just how good they are!
