Froch running out of time?

12-May-08 17:39
It’s sad to see that Carl Froch has only had 22 fights and is now 30. If I remember rightly he was relatively late coming to the pro game, and he’s had quite a few critics of his style, relying on his reflexes more than a traditional boxing style, but he seems to have some power to his punches.

I wonder whether he’s running out of time to make the big time, and big fights?

I’ve met Carl a couple of times, and he seems like a really nice guy who was also taking care of his kid brother. He seemed very dilligent in his training and wasn’t arrogant in his demeanour.

I hope he can get through this unfortunate fiasco he’s ended up with this weekend, and hopefully will get more motivation to put on a dynamic, explosive display he needs to convince broadcasters and other promoters he needs to be taken seriously.

Momentum is important in a boxer’s career, as can evidently be seen with the likes of Khan and of course, the early career of Mike Tyson. It seems Carl has been a little unfortunate not to keep the momentum going consistently on his career. Lack of momentum can also lead to a boxers’, and for that matter any sports person, worst enemy - lack of motivation.

If you keep competing against guys you know don’t deserve to be in the same sport as you let alone the same ring, then you can loose focus, and in boxing, more than any other sport, the results can be catastrophic for your career. Being knocked out by a lesser journeyman can instantly send you to the back of a very long queue.

Found this clip on YouTube that shows off some of Carl’s talents:

I don’t think he would seriously challenge Joe Calzaghe - he’d need to sure up his defense (!) and there’s now way Joe would take him on as their eras didn’t really overlap. I think the best has yet to come from Carl, and then the debates may start that if he HAD fought Joe, who would have won!
