The Principal Facts Regarding Barefoot Running

10-Feb-12 16:41

Barefoot running is the term often used to describe the act of running without wearing shoes on the feet. There is also minimalist running, which involves use of flexible, thin-soled shoes. Historically, this practice was universal, but is very rare in modern, industrialized countries. Though it is still quite common in poorer areas of the world.

The athletic shoe is what is common worn by athletes during competitions, specifically when running. But there are some shoeless runners who are Olympic Champions that hold records. Individuals who support this type of running believe that the exercise is more effect and healthy when padded shoes are not worn. There is not much research to support this, but it may reduce chronic injuries or stress injuries.

Human mechanics will vary whether the shoes are present or not. While wearing padded footwear, the foot is more likely to hit on the heel before the forefoot. With bare feet, or thin shoes, feet land on the forefoot, rolling inwards and the heel dropping down. Pushing off is done with the forefoot or lifting of the leg.

The 1970s saw a surge in jogging, which led to the development of athletic footwear. Since then, this footwear has been attributed to many injuries. Some avid runners have opted to go barefoot to relieve symptoms of their chronic injuries. Naturally, the feet and lower legs are designed to absorb shock that occurs during landing and turn energy into motion, through the spring of the natural foot arch.

With the large amounts of padding found in athletic footwear, the feet land on the heel, not the ball. Because of this, the lower legs and feet are not absorbing shock. Instead, it is sent to the heel and up to the knees and hips. Studies show that the likelihood of developing a chronic problem is often the result of this type of footwear.

Going shoeless is not the only option. Some wear thin shoes that have very little padding, such as moccasins or thin sandals. These create a similar effect as going barefoot, but also offer protection against water, dirt and other elements. Many shoe manufacturers have created shoes that mimic the feel of going shoeless, offering a more natural experience and flexibility.

Disadvantages and advantages exist for this practice. Overall, this practice can strengthen muscles. It is also less expensive to run without shoes than to purchase athletic footwear and believed to take us less energy as well. Without a shoe or a thick sole, people are more likely to injure themselves from landing on a sharp object or something else. Also, tendonitis may develop in those used to doing this activity with a shoe, who suddenly begin to run shoeless.

Barefoot running is the activity of running without wearing shoes. There are many supporters and non-supporters, but research shows that there may be benefits in leaving the shoes off. Individuals who do not feel comfortable wearing no shoes, can wear one of the many different shoes designed to mimic the barefoot feeling.
