I’ve been thinkin’. I’d actually still like to see Paul Briggs vs Danny Green. If Greeny wants to ’make it up to his fans’ there is no better way than for him to make it up to the publick than to actually have a rematch...not with Mundine...but with Paul The Hurricane Briggs. When you think about it - it really makes a whole lot of sense.
Where as before there must have been some worries about weather Paul might get lucky with a punch - so it was to their advantage to give him next to no lead up time and keep him to the fight by going to Perf (even after nsw combat rubber stamp authority complained Briggsy had broken their bathroom scales.) That would be gone.
But if they gave him a chance to train and get back into shape, all of a sudden he could at least look a bit better.
But we could see the match up, kinda like an exhibition bout. Briggs can make a kind of ’come back’. Greeny might even get peppered with a few hits. There is all the publicity and hoopalah. It’s still a perfect match up for Green because he can always beat Briggs. Briggs may even draw a round before getting k.o’d again.
On the night of the FIRST fight, when Paul finnally took his shirt off. There was a kind of shock. ’Oh, he’s got fatter since the signing.’ That’s a new one. Then after you got over the shock, there was this kind of realisation.. the video footage hype reel of Paul ’in training’ was litterally the sum total ammount of training he had done! It was not a highlights tape of the guy punching the bag and working the pads..it was a big brother style coverage of every momment he had put into preparation.....lasting 90 seconds.
There was no Coolangatta Gold running on the beach sequence to the music of Bill Conti. What we were treated with was two middle aged pudgy blokes, bouncing around the ring in their street clothes.
Disturbing also was the true warmth and fear evident in the hug Billy Hussain gave Paul just before the first bell. It was’nt so much as a ’good luck’ as it was a ’good bye.’
It looked to me like they did’nt even have plans for a stool to be ready for between the 1st and 2nd rounds.
To be honnest, The first 20 seconds or were quite exciting. Once Pauls blubber had settled and you had adjusted yourself to the idea he was going to be one of those high pant wearing boxers coveing up for his big gut now..not the boxer we remember...It started to look like a good shape up.
Suddenly he had a little bit of speed in his jab. He seemed to clip Greeny on the ear to get his measure. The foot work was back, the muscle memory, the training, swagger, the pop of the right, the duck and the reset..and then it was all over. Downed by a puch that perhaps a buffer of hard muscles could have helped fend off.
So this is it. If THE GREEN MACHINE wantS to make it up to us. Give Paul a year, let him get back into training, strength, speed, nutrician, cardio, fitness. Also book him a couple of warm up fights, ( if Green is not offering them world title shots) And lets see it! If he does’nt have a nurological condition...as those vicious rumours and the video evidence seems to confirm, then give him another shot. Give us what we would have paid for.
With this fiasco re-completeley played out, everyone gets a chance to redeem themselves....Eccept for maybe the rulling body of the title for allowing it to be a title shot in the first place.
You know what I am saying don’tcha? Jones, Siaca, Briggs all had a lot more in common than just being in the ring agaist Danny Green. They ticked all the boxes. All were slow, old, undertrained, former headliners with not a chance of winning a single round.
Either give Briggs another shot ...or maybe the so caled rulling body for his title could strip Greeny of his bellt? And then make him fight an actual contender for it.
Just and idea folks. But I recon we’ll be seeing Green Vs Briggs II before that one.
