Pound For Pound Ranking Update

22-Nov-10 10:24
Sergio Martinez wins: Sumio Yamada/WBC
By Paul Upham: As a member of the Yahoo! Sports boxing poll comprising of 43 boxing writers from around the world I submitted my monthly pound for pound rankings on Monday 22 November 2010. Sergio Martinez arrives sensationally at No.4 after his stunning 2nd round knockout win over Paul Williams.

Juan Manuel Marquez remains at No.3 when taking into consideration his wide body of quality work and his two thrilling close fights with Manny Pacquiao. Michael Katsidis gets the chance to crash Marquez’s party in Las Vegas next weekend.

I have ranked Manny Pacquiao at No.1 ahead of Floyd Mayweather Jr at No.2. Pacquiao’s preparedness to move up in weight and face the bigger Antonio Margarito at junior middleweight secures him extra merit. It should be noted that Mayweather never fought Margarito when he had the chance and an offer from promoter Bob Arum.

The only way to truly determine the No.1 and No.2 positions accurately is inside the boxing ring. More than ever, boxing needs Pacquiao and Mayweather to fight it out in 2011.

It is the only way to end the ongoing debate of who is truly No.1.
