SHANNON BRIGGS LOOKS TO GET BACK IN THE MIX

05-May-10 08:07

Shannon Briggs , former WBO Heavyweight champion is setting a hectic pace in his bid to secure a title opportunity.

In May he plans two bouts a week apart, a schedule than may have been common place back in Sugar Ray Robinson’s day but is rarely seen in 2010.

May 21 sees a New York bout against Dominique Alexander,19-8-1(9) ; on May 28 he travels to Norfolk , Virginia for another keep busy match against veteran natural Cruiser Rob Calloway who is a deceptively impressive 70-11-2(57) coming in.

Some of this may have to do with the C grade opposition Briggs is mowing down to keep busy as well as his proclivity in blasting out guys in under a minute. Alexander is unproven at Heavyweight while Calloway is a small Heavyweight from the mid west whose 70 wins have come primarily against nondescript opposition who turned up for a payday rather than an actual fight.

With 28 first round wins, and his last bout lasting a grand total of 28 seconds expect this opening round trend to continue in May.

Briggs will probably keep the easy win routine going until another title shot beckons. At the very least with a record of 49-5-1(43) and one no contest despite well documented stamina issues he is always in with a punchers chance.

He had Lennox Lewis on the precipice of defeat in the first round way back in 1998 in a WBC title shot and wrested the WBO belt from Sergei Lyakovich with one second to go in the twelfth round a few years ago.

So late and early if his conditioning is above par his power should be available at any stage of a fight.

Even at this evergreen stage of his career a bout against either Klitschko would be intriguing if he can land a bomb on either brother. The lack of marketable or otherwise interesting US Heavyweights makes definite room for a Briggs reentry into the title fight sweepstakes.

Fight fans will watch with interest as the dreadlocked bomber embarks on the home stretch of his career.
