In this week’s edition of Ask The Editor (ATE), we preview this weekend’s Manny Pacquiao-David Diaz clash, take our first look at a possible Kelly Pavlik-Arthur Abraham super-fight and evaluate the reasons Joe Calzaghe is promoting his next fight. We consider whether Paulie Malignaggi will give Ricky Hatton more trouble than expected, look at the Sugar Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga fight and much more.

Name : David Neal
Country : USA
Your Question :
David Diaz is much better than many critics give him credit for. I give him a good chance of beating the Pacman on Saturday. Does the team give him much chance of beating the new P4P No.1?

CLIVE BERNATH ANSWERS: Hi David. I see Manny Pacquiao as a slight favourite going in to this and my gut feeling is his speed, high workrate and experience will see him through a tough fight on points or late stoppage.

PAUL UPHAM ANSWERS: It is a good fight. You have to admire Pacquiao, there is seemingly not much he won’t attempt. Stepping up again to another weight class. You are right, Diaz is better than given credit for. I think Pacquiao will win, but he won’t have it all his own way.

MICHAEL NORBY ANSWERS: Diaz is a tough and worthy title holder but he struggled against a faded Morales a year ago and then fought to a majority points victory over Ramon Montano in March. I like him a lot but he’s just not in the same league as Pacquiao. Pacman by decision.

Name : Ernesto Borja
Country : The Philippines
Your Question :
I want to give congratulations to the best boxer in the world, pound for pound of every weight class, the great Manny Pacquiao! After Manny beats Diaz by knockout this weekend, what is the next biggest fight for him please?

CLIVE BERNATH ANSWERS: Well, there is talk of a Ricky Hatton fight but I’d like to see a third with Juan Manuel Marquez. Hatton would be too big I feel

PAUL UPHAM ANSWERS: If Pacquiao can beat Diaz, there are some good fights out there for him. A third fight with Marquez is one. But I’d really like to see the Pacman vs. the Hitman. Pacquiao-Hatton, bring it on I say.

MICHAEL NORBY ANSWERS: Well, with Floyd Mayweather Junior retiring and scuppering (at least for now) a 2009 rematch with Ricky Hatton, Pacquiao could step in. Hitman vs. Pacman – I’d buy that.

Name : Matt Rivers
Country : USA
Your Question :
OK, I watched Arthur Abraham for the first time on Showtime and he looks good. Real good. Is he really a chance to beat Kelly Pavlik?

CLIVE BERNATH ANSWERS: Of course he does, Matt, Abraham is a very strong puncher but leaves himself open. I feel Pavlik is the better boxer and will exploit this. I just can’t bet against Pavlik at 160lbs

PAUL UPHAM ANSWERS: Abraham proved in the way he dominated Miranda that he has overcome the broken jaw he had. Pavlik-Abraham must be made. We saw Pavlik down against Taylor, so there is no reason that Abraham could put him down. But how would Abraham handle Pavlik’s own firepower. It is a fight that must be made.

MICHAEL NORBY ANSWERS: I thought Abraham looked very good also, Matt. It’s an extremely interesting fight, which should be made as soon as possible. I can’t wait to see it but I’d have to favor Pavlik in a wonderful clash of styles.

Name : Alan Fleming
Country : USA
Your Question :
With Joe Calzaghe now ‘ducking’ Kelly Pavlik to face the much tougher Roy Jones Jr – that was a JOKE by the way – what are the best fights out there now for Pavlik?

CLIVE BERNATH ANSWERS: Alan, I believe a fight with Arthur Abraham is on the cards but how about a move up to super-middle and crack at Mikkel Kessler?

PAUL UPHAM ANSWERS: It is disappointing in some ways that Calzaghe is facing RJJ instead of Pavlik, but he is in the position of being able to choose his opponents. If Calzaghe does beat Jones and retires undefeated, the one thing that I don’t want to see is people in 20 years time looking back and thinking that Calzaghe beat Bernard Hopkins and Jones when they were both in the prime. They were both clearly past their best.

MICHAEL NORBY ANSWERS: Pavlik really should fight Arthur Abraham soon. There is a possibility that John Duddy will be an opponent for the champion on St Patrick’s Day next year in New York. I’ve been to a few Duddy fights in New York and the atmosphere would be stunning.

Name : Ian Harding
Country : UK
Your Question :
After all these years, now Joe Calzaghe has left promoter Frank Warren. What does it all mean?

CLIVE BERNATH ANSWERS: I think you’d have to ask Joe that one, only he and the very closest people around will know why they made that decision and what it means.

PAUL UPHAM ANSWERS: It is strange after all these years when Warren has promoted Calzaghe so effectively to the position he is now in. If Roy Jones Jr is Calzaghe’s last fight, maybe he is just trying to maximise his final in the ring payday? By excluding Warren they are freeing up enough money to pay Roy want he wants? Either way, with Warren not taking his slice of the pie, there will be more money for others.

MICHAEL NORBY ANSWERS: It’s a business decision, Ian. Managing the fight themselves means that Joe and Roy will keep most of the marzipan. Why not? Poor old Frank Warren, though. He guides Hatton and Calzaghe to the wedding, albeit slowly, and is then jilted at the alter.

Name : John Steeds
Country : UK
Your Question :
I am a huge Ricky Hatton fan. Should I have any worries about the ‘Manchester Hitman’ fighting Malignaggi in the USA? Hatton is going to win well, won’t he?

CLIVE BERNATH ANSWERS: Yes you may have cause to worry. I actually feel that if Malignaggi fight his fight he has the style to out-point Hatton.

PAUL UPHAM ANSWERS: I don’t think Malignaggi will be an easy win for Hatton. It is certainly not the style of boxer that Hatton does beat at. See Floyd Mayweather Jr and Luis Collazo. Hatton does best against someone who comes straight at him, such as Kostya Tszyu. I’m think Hatton will win, but it could be ugly.

MICHAEL NORBY ANSWERS: I think he will win, John. Malignaggi has terrific boxing skills but he looked shaky in his last couple of fights and doesn’t have the power to trouble Hatton. He’ll win his fair share of rounds but I think Hatton will squeak through by decision. If Malignaggi could punch I’d probably favor him to win, but he can’t. C’est la vie.

Name : Aaron Lee
Country : USA
Your Question :
Sugar Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga? This is an interesting match. What can we expect from this one and how long before Mayorga commences his usual routine and insults Mrs Mosley!

CLIVE BERNATH ANSWERS: Great fight even if it is a few years too late. We can expect the usual trash talk from Mayorga. If Mosley has anything left at all he beats Mayorga on points. All good boxers outbox the crude slugging Mayorga.

PAUL UPHAM ANSWERS: Mosley’s career is at an interesting stage. One year ago his goal was to become P4P No.1 again by beating Floyd Mayweather Jr. That fight seems very unlikely now. What is the big fight out there for him? Certainly, while Mayorga will make for an entertaining match, Mosley will be favourite to win. But he lost to Cotto and with Mayweather gone Mosley is missing the star opponent he needs.

MICHAEL NORBY ANSWERS: I couldn’t care less about this fight. Let Mayorga suck down a pack of smokes and spit verbal loogies at Jin Mosley at press conferences all he wants. Whatever sells, they’re going to need it.
