Froch running before the proverbial walk

Froch running before the proverbial walk

By Clive Bernath: There is no doubt whatsoever that British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch (pic by Mr Will right)
is a talented prospect. But he only need look no further than fellow world amateur championship medallist David Haye to realise that it is unwise to run before you can walk.

Days prior to knocking out the overmatched Damon Hague in one round last Friday night (Sept 24), Froch claimed via a press release that he is the most talented sportsman in Britain, and at the same time dismissing the obvious achievements of Real Madrid footballer David Beckham, Racing driver Jenson Button and Tennis player Tim Henman.

In his latest attempt to grab the headlines the 27 year-old from Nottingham has called out current super-middleweight champions Robin Reid (IBO) and Joe Calzaghe (WBO). Both Reid, a former WBC champion and the undefeated Calzaghe, have fought 79 times between them, losing just four and stopped a total of 57 opponents, not to mention 10 of those men in the opposite corner were genuine world champions.

Bermondsey puncher David Haye, whilst not quite so vocal in his ability, also thought he could step up in class after just 10 fights and beat a genuine world top 10 fighter in Carl Thompson. But the 40 year Thompson, who had seen and done it all at world level, took the 23 year-old Haye to school, stopping him inside five rounds. Froch, who has won all his 14 fights since turning pro appears to feel he too can step up to face the best, despite mediocre performances against his two toughest opponents to date, African Charles Adamu (pts 12) and British born Canadian Mark Woolnough (rsf 11).

In a press release sent out earlier today, Froch took a swipe at Calzaghe's father Enzo for demanding £1 million to face Froch and also at Calzaghe's October 22 clash with Kabary Salem.

"That speaks volumes," said a confidant Froch. "Daddy has already priced his son out of the market; he obviously wants none of it.

"Why on earth would he need £1 million to fight me if I am just a fourteen fight novice as he said?

"That's probably three times what he normally earns. Don't tell me he is getting anywhere near that for his next fight against Kabary Salem?

"He obviously thinks Salem is more dangerous than me given that he believes Robin Reid would beat me.

"Reid clearly doesn't think the same; I have offered him a fight on several occasions but he has kept decidedly quiet."

On the subject of his recent attack on some of Britain best loved and respected sportsman Froch commented:
"Some people seem to have been a bit offended by comments that I am, without exception, Britain's most talented sportsperson, pound-for-pound, sport-for-sport.

"That was never the intention, I was merely speaking the truth. I have more all round attributes than any of the guys I mentioned as an example, including Beckham and Henman.

"I am fitter, faster, stronger and have more bottle.

"If they would like me to demonstrate that - how about a friendly little competition? I am sure the BBC would arrange for us to all go on superstars next year! They could even invite Joe Calzaghe as well."

Again, I reiterate, Froch has immense talent but as most sportsman are fully aware, remarks such as the above and the disrespect of your peers especially-those that have proved themselves the best in their chosen fields -often come back to bite you on the backside.

Carl Froch, through his promoters Hennessy Sports, has now committed himself to becoming a multi million dollar sportsman and the undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world, nothing other than that will do.
