Mayweather jr in no rush (picmary Ann Owen)
By Clive Bernath: Floyd Mayweather Jr has announced that he is in no rush to face Manny Pacquiao to decide who is the world’s No.1 boxer.
Speaking to the Associated Press in Miami over the weekend, where he was coaching a charity Basketball game the undefeated American showman said: "I’m not interested in rushing to do anything,
"I’m not really thinking about boxing right now. I’m just relaxing. I fought about 60 days ago, so I’m just enjoying myself, enjoying life, enjoying my family and enjoying my vacation."
Ok, The richest fight in boxing history is not gonna happen on November 13 but its not all doom and gloom and I as much as anyone am hugely disappointed at not be able to see the two best boxers on the planet go at it. But before we all go and blow a gasket and jump on the various fan forums to have a pop at ‘Money’ Mayweather jr lets at least try and understand why this fight is not gonna happen in 2010.
Only Floyd really knows why he won’t be in the opposite corner to Manny on November 13 but I suspect the biggest reason could be the huge uncertainty of whether or not his uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather will be around to prepare him for the biggest fight of his life. For those of you that don’t already know Roger is due to stand trial on August 2 on assault charges against a young female boxer.
Regardless of the outcome of the trial- to be involved in such a high profile court case whilst at the same time preparing to face the biggest fight of your career-will certainly have an effect on Floyd Jr.
Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum voiced the same opinion over the weekend when he hosted a media conference call to clarify the latest situation regarding Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao.
Speaking on the late night conference call Arum said; “Without knowing, I am sure that there is a very good reason that Floyd Mayweather has for not committing to a fight at this time. I really and truly believe that.
“Now I am speculating that one of the reasons could be the uncertainty regarding Roger Mayweather and for people that don’t know, Roger Mayweather is scheduled for court in Nevada regarding criminal charges.
“Now I know how Manny would feel if he had to go into a fight like this without the services of Freddie Roach and presumably Floyd would feel the same way going into a fight like this without the services of his uncle Roger who has been training him for a number of years.”
Arum has worked tirelessly to try and make Pacquiao vs Mayweather Jr over the last year and could be forgiven for running out of patience but instead of attacking the undefeated fighter, Arum found himself defending him instead.
“Right now I understand Floyd’s position,” insisted Arum. “I believe his position regarding Roger. We know about this serious issue regarding Roger. I can understand Floyd delaying any plans for a future fight until there is a resolution of the Roger situation. Once you understand that, how can you jump on the guy?
So for the second time in as many fights it looks like Manny Pacquiao will have to pass on a date with Mayweather Jr. According to Arum it now looks like Manny will face either a rematch with Miguel Cotto for the junior middleweight title or the disgraced Antonio Margarito. Pacquiao is due to inform Arum which fighter he prefers to face in the next week or so then negotiations will begin.
Of course it’s a shame we are not going to witness Pacquiao and Mayweather battle it out on November 13 but one gets the feeling it will eventually happen. After all it is the only fight out there at present that genuinely deserves ppv and ‘Super Fight’ status.
I’m afraid were all gonna have to be a little more patient and wait a little bit longer to see the most eagerly awaited clash since Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson. I just hope neither fighter is past his sell by date when it does happen!
