By Clive Bernath: Peter Fury, the trainer and uncle of Tyson Fury, fears David Haye could again back out of their rescheduled February 8 heavyweight showdown in favour of a crack at WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.
The former WBA heavyweight titleholder pulled out of last weekend’s all British showdown with Fury after sustaining a deep cut above his left eye and Peter Fury fears that even though a new date has been agreed Haye could pull out again.
Vitali has indicated that he wants to defend his WBC crown one more time before retiring to concentrate on a political career in his native Ukraine. And that fight may just be against Haye.
Speaking on Steve Bunce’s Espn podcast, Peter Fury said: " You’ve only got to look at how he’s(Haye) always wanted Vitali, who said he wants his last fight to be with David.
"I’m a realist, I’m not investigating [the cut] too deeply because the fight was called off. It’s back on, but it’s like I’ve always said - it’s 50/50 whether this fight will ever take place in my opinion, because we’re hearing so much about the Klitschkos.
"There’s a lot of politics involved. We have to wait with baited breath. We’re amending the contract to put a clause in to make sure this fight happens. We’ve left it with the legal teams, if they don’t get signed then we know what the situation is, which we’d rather know than find out later.
"We’re putting the pressure on their camp to agree to make sure this fight happens. We’re going to put a deadline of the next 14 working days. If it doesn’t happen, we’re moving on. Already, we’ve lost Tyson’s ranking and mandatory position."
It would indeed be a massive blow to British boxing fans if this fight is scraped. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again it’s not only the most lucrative fight for all concerned but British boxing and the casual sports fans badly want this fight as well. It’s the only fight that makes any sense for both men unless Haye does get Vitali. But the biggest concern for me is that yet again the reputation of pro boxing in the UK has been tarnished because fight fans have been let down. Haye has a moral obligation to honour his original agreement to fight Tyson Fury so lets hope he does the right thing and enters that ring to do battler on February 8, 2014.
