Andre Ward (left) Is The Real Champ

By Clive Bernath: As if Boxing fans were not confused already regarding who is the legitimate No.1 world champion in their respective weight divisions. It is bad enough that the WBC have created such a ridiculous array of titles such as ‘Champion Emeritus’, ‘Silver Champion, and ‘Diamond Champion. Now, the WBA-not to be outdone- have crowned their THIRD world champion at Super-middleweight.
Yes, you heard it right, THREE ‘world champions’. At the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, Ukraine on Friday night Karoly Balzsay unanimously out-pointed Stanyslav Kashtanov over 12 rounds to win the vacant WBA super-middleweight title, despite Ireland’s Brian Magee being crowned the WBA interim super-middleweight champion after defeating Jaime Barboza only last month and unbeaten American Andre Ward holding the WBA Super-middleweight crown.
Those of us that follow the sport closely fully acknowledge Andre Ward as the main champion due to the fact he claimed the title from then full champion Mikkel Kessler but how do you explain this the average boxing fan?
It is bad enough having several world governing bodies all boasting world champions but the likes of the WBA and WBC crowning three world champions at one weight is a complete joke. It really is about time a single world governing was created to stop all this nonsense. The aforementioned of course will never happen but until it does, how can we expect our beloved sport to be taken seriously?
