Flores KO's Pineda/Spinks Decisions Powell

By: Marc Livitz: BJ Flores scored a decisive 6th round TKO victory over Hugo Pineda Saturday in Springfield, Missouri. Flores (27(17)-1-1) was impressive from the opening bell and sent his opponent to the canvas in the second round.

Pineda, (39(28)-6(5)-1), has now dropped four of his last five fights and Saturday’s contest was his first trip to the ring since July of 2008. With the sixth round stoppage win, BJ Flores has now won three consecutive bouts since falling short of winning the IBO Cruiserweight title after he lost to Danny Green via unanimous decision in November of 2010.

The co-main event of the evening featured an IBF Junior Middleweight title elimination contest between Cory Spinks (39(11)-6(2)) and Sechew Powell (26(15)-4(1)). Although the bout was fought at a steady, back and forth pace, the night belonged to Spinks, as he utilized an effective jab and constant lateral movement. Spinks earned a unanimous decision win.

Sechew Powell, of Brooklyn, New York had sought to get his career back into the victory column, as his last bout in June 2011 was a unanimous decision loss to IBF light middleweight champion Cornelius Brundage. The victory should set up a rematch for Cory Spinks versus Brundage, as he himself lost to Brundage in August of 2010 by way of a fifth round TKO.
