Lomachenko KO's Rodriguez in Nine

By Marc Livitz in Las Vegas: In the first of just two undercard bouts on the card this evening at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Vasyl "Hi Tech" Lomachenko scored a ninth round knockout victory over Puerto Rican Gamailer Rodriguez in a contest for the WBO featherweight championship.

Lomachenko (4-1, 2 KO’s) blocked Gamalier’s left jab right after the opening bell. The pace overall was a patient one early. Southpaw Vasyl picked up the pace afterward and connected with a straight left with about a minute to spare and continued to show notable defensive skills. He looked to use shots to the body as a means of opening chances to land higher up in the second, yet Rodriguez (25-3-3, 17 KO’s) did more than just hang with him throughout the round.

The Ukranian former Olympian began to press and pick up the speed of his punches in round three. His jab landed with more accuracy and to greater effect in the fourth as well as fifth and his right hook was landing thanks to Rodriguez’s lack of movement. The tide had more than turned. Lomachenko was really becoming beautiful to watch. His skill set was remarkable. Left hooks and combinations in the sixth from Vasyl had Gamailer on the back foot moving just south of panic. His guard was breaking especially on his right side thanks to to successive body shots. Rodriguez would ultimately have three points deducted for low blows.

The first knockdown was registered thanks to a crisp combination to the midsection in the closing minute of the seventh. A right hook and an uppercut started round eight. Lomachenko was putting on a show for the sparse crowd in the MGM. Rodriguez wasn’t answering much as Vasyl landed shot after shot, including several consecutive taps to the head.

The damage was piling up as round nine commenced and shortly after bell, the second and final knockdown of the fight would spell the end of the contest. A right to the body set up shots upstairs and Gamailer took a knee. He allowed himself to be counted out by referee Tony Weeks. Vasyl Lomachenko wins via ninth round KO over Gamailer Rodriguez to retain his WBO featherweight title.
