Australian News: King Davidson wins, Dawson sick, Talipeau still Undefeated

By Paul Upham: Hot Sydney based Nigerian prospect King Davidson won the vacant Australian junior middleweight boxing title with a ten round unanimous points decision win over Robert Toomey on Friday night June 19 at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre in Sydney.

The 24 year-old southpaw, who is trained by Johnny Lewis and managed by Peter Mitrevski Sr, won by scores of 100-93, 100-90 and Ray Reed 99-91.

Lewis has already stated that Davidson 9-0 (5) has the potential to be a future world champion.

On the same Friday night card at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre, 25 year-old Junior Talipeau 14-0 (5) remained undefeated after beating Ben Crampton on a split points decision over ten rounds. Two judges scored the fight for the Australian middleweight champion Talipeau 97-93 and 96-94, while the third judge scored the fight for Crampton 96-95.

Perth’s Daniel Dawson was scheduled to make his American debut on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights on June 19, but was forced to pull out of the card at The Laredo Entertainment Centre in Laredo, Texas in the semi-main event. Suffering from a viral infection, Dawson wanted to fight on, but trainer Justine Fortune made the decision to cancel the fight after seeing how sick the former kick-boxing world champion was.

24 year-old Pat Rullo 8-1 (1) won the vacant Victoria junior middleweight title with an eight round unanimous points win over Jurland Ceniza on Friday night June 19 at the Racecourse Reception Centre in Moonee Valley, Victoria. Judges scored the fight for Rullo 78-73, 80-71 and 80-71. The card was promoted by Brian Amatruda, Barry Michael and Peter Iannazzo.

21 year-old Kerry Foley suffered a shock loss to American journeyman Terrance Smith in his USA debut on May 30 in California. The Australian suffered a broad left cheek bone during the fight and has now been told to rest up for another eight weeks before continuing his career, which means he will not appear on the new Channel 10 ONE HD Thursday night boxing series.

Congratulations to Caringbah junior middleweight Ryan Waters and wife Cherie, who welcomed a new son Beau into the world last week. 31 year-old Waters, who promotes his owns shows, will hold a promotion on July 31 at the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club.
