By Paul Upham: WBC super middleweight boxing world champion Carl Froch looks set to make the first defence of his title against former undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor.
Taylor’s promoter Lou DiBella revealed to SecondsOut on Tuesday that the fight between the new champion from Nottingham, UK and the WBC No.1 contender from Little Rock, USA was almost finalised.
“It looks like it is going to be a go,” said DiBella. “We are just trying to lock in a site and it will be one of the last two weeks of April.”
In a press release on February 6, Taylor 28-2-1 (17) issued a statement about 31 year-old Froch 24-0 (19) and many observers suggested the fight might not be made.
“As for Carl Froch, he is no Ray Leonard,” 30 year-old Taylor was quoted, “and certainly no Joe Calzaghe, and can’t be mentioned in the same breath as those two great champions. Carl Froch never earned the right to be on the same canvas as Joe Calzaghe! Other than in his hometown, a bare few know the name Carl Froch, and how to spell it or pronounce it.”
