By Paul Upham in Sydney: Golden Gloves Promotions announced on Tuesday a long awaited return for boxing on free to air television in Australia with a series of four events to be produced in partnership with the Channel 10 Network. The first card will be held on Saturday October 25 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney.

In a bold and exciting partnership which will help boost the profile of all levels of boxing, former cruiserweight world title challenger Adam Watt, the Managing Director of Golden Gloves, is planning to bring some prestige back to the sport.

“Boxing is ready to be taken to the next level,” said Watt. “We have got so many potential world champions out there from gyms all around Australia who are ready to go to the next level. What we are going to try to do with Channel 10 is showcase these fighters. Showcase them as what they are, which is sportspeople in their own right. To give them some exposure in Australia so they don’t have to run off to American and be hidden from us for so long.”

The October 25 main event will see South African Thomas Mashaba 20-2-4 (12) facing Ugandan born Australian citizen Jackson Asiku 22-3 (12), for the vacant IBO junior featherweight world title. Exciting undefeated lightweight prospect Lenny Zappavigna 16-0 (12) will feature in the main support.

While the full nine-fight card will be confirmed shortly, some of the following boxers and matches are expected to be seen on the night.

Lenny Zappavigna vs. TBA
Zac Awad vs. Daniel Pawsey
Adam Forsyth vs. TBA
King Davidson vs. Lee Oti
Jarrod Fletcher vs. TBA
Danny Price vs. Dylan Goddard

The ringside television commentary team is a deep one, headed by long time Sky Channel voice of boxing Mathew Brooks, Daily Telegraph writer Paul Kent, amateur star Paul Miller and training legend Johnny Lewis. Channel 10’s Greg Rust will anchor the program. Current WBA No.1 heavyweight contender Kali “Checkmate” Meehan will file live dressing room reports and Channel 10 star Ali Mutch will provide roving reports from the crowd.

Tickets for the card are now on sale at Ticketek. The first professional fight will commence at 6:30pm. There will also be PCYC amateur boxing from 4:30pm.

The card will be broadcast from 8:30pm around Australia on Channel 10’s High Definition Channel. It will be replayed later in the week on Channel 10’s free to air channel.

Boxing has a rich tradition at the Hordern Pavilion and Golden Gloves wants to tap into that history during its telecast with clips to be shown of the many great fights held there.

“To walk around the Hordern Pavilion today was a walk down memory lane,” said Johnny Lewis. “I was reminded of all the fights I was involved in. Jeff Fenech won his first world title here. I remember Jeff Harding in two or three great encounters. To be here involved in the sport again, it is a much needed shot in the arm for boxing.”
