Gulyekevich Retain European Crown in Halle

European super-featherweight champion Sergey Gulyekevich successfully defended his title against previously undefeated German Vitaly Tajbert, his official challenger, in Halle, Germany on Friday night.

Gulyekevich was judged the winner on all three official’s scorecards,117-112; 117-112 and 115-113.

The promoter of the event was Dietmar Poszwa’s Spotlight Boxing.

Tajbert, a top class amateur and undefeated as a professional, was considered by many as a big threat to Gulyakevich, specially with the fight taking place in Germany where it is so notoriously difficult to get the decision.

However, Gulyakevich managed to keep control of the situation, scoring with many uppercuts and sharp counter punches. Gulyekevich’s manager Philippe Fondu now hopes this impressive win will now open the door of a top position in the world ratings as Tajbert was highly rated himself by most world governing bodies.

Gulyakevich won the European title by a shut-out decision against big puncher Leva Kirakossyan.
