By Paul Upham: IBF Pan Pacific junior middleweight champion Nader Hamdan will challenge for the vacant OPBF title against Korean Daesan Lee this Friday (Oct 19) at the Star City Casino on a Jeff Fenech Fight Night promotion.

The IBF No.4 is looking for another impressive win against better opposition in order to stay on track for a world title shot in 2002. “This will be the toughest fight of my career so far against a boxer I know very little about,” said Hamdan.

“Lee is rated No.1 in the junior middleweight division by the OPBF and he is no easy beat. He will be coming here to win the title and I will have to be at my best to win. Korean boxers are always very tough and aggressive in their approach. I’ve taken my training to another level, with every fight so important to me now. I have to beat whoever is in front of me so I can realise my dream of becoming a world champion.”

Last Friday night in the USA Ronald “Winky” Wright won the vacant IBF title, a crown that Hamdan has his sights set on. With Wright likely to face Sugar Shane Mosley in January, Hamdan knows that he is in one of the sport’s most exciting divisions.

“Wright is a great boxer and with Mosley coming up and Oscar De la Hoya holding the WBC title and Fernando Vargas holding the WBA title, there are many great opportunities out there for me. But before I can think about any other fights, I have to win the OPBF title this Friday night,” said Hamdan, 25-0-(13).

“With Jeff Fenech in my corner I am getting into the best possible physical condition and we have really worked hard on my skills inside the ropes.”

Winning the OPBF belt will see Hamdan travel to Japan early in 2002 to face WBC No.11 Akira Ohigashi for a mandatory defence of the title. “I’m looking forward to fighting in Japan and would also like to have another fight in the USA before I get my chance at a world title,” said Hamdan. “I don’t want to get a world title shot just for the sake of getting it. I want to make sure when the time comes that I am totally prepared to become world champion.”

Hamdan has launched his new web site this week, www.NaderHamdan.com to coincide with his latest challenge. “My web site has been developed for all my fans. You can find my career history, my latest photos and some video clips of me in action. There is a chat room and a forum where you can leave messages for me,” said Hamdan.

In the co-main support bouts, Arnel Barotillo will face Jackson Asiku for the Australian featherweight title and Team Fenech’s hot Armenian prospect Vic Darchinian will face Sande Kitzo for the vacant Australian flyweight title.

Also on the card, Team Fenech’s Australian Olympian Danny Green faces Daniel Thi at super middleweight, Rubin Rabah vs. Krong Sak Lek, Gino Zampogna vs. Brown Eyin at super middleweight and Steve McKinnon vs. Steve McIvor at cruiserweight.

Tickets are on sale now at Ticketek with the action being televised live around Australia on Fox Sports commencing at 7.30pm.
