Hussein looking to win - and win well

By Paul Upham: At this stage in his career, just winning is not good enough for WBU super-bantamweight champion Nedal “Skinny” Hussein, 22-1 (12). He wants to win, but, more importantly, win well.
Nedal (left) and older brother WBO No.2 flyweight Hussein Hussein (right) will headline promoter Kieran O’Connor’s “Respect 3…The Eliminator” card at the Octagon, Randwick Racecourse in Sydney this Friday night. Nedal Hussein will face an as yet unknown late replacement after original Thai opponent Vodchingchai Sornthong Gym was refused medical clearance today.

“It’s a great venue, I think it’s the best venue in Australia,” said Hussein, who will be looking for an improved performance from his last fight when he won the WBU belt in June.

“Just working on everything. A bit busier, be tidier and try to keep my composure.”

Although the WBU belt has not been around as long as the other major world titles, Hussein is proud to wear it around his waist and hopes to defend it regularly.

“I’m proud to hold it. I fought for a version of the WBC title when I fought Pacquiao and they did the wrong thing by me. The WBU is a quieter sanctioning body and it is not controlled by all that politics that goes on,” said Hussein.

“I’d like to fight in Europe and defend the title five or six times and hopefully we’ll get a crack at another super bantamweight champion, hopefully (IBF champion) Manny Pacquiao.”

There were mixed feelings for Hussein when he heard that former opponent Joe Morales, who he beat earlier this year in Philadelphia on May 5, was given a shot at WBA junior lightweight champion Joel Casamayor this coming weekend.

“It makes me feel a bit better because when I was there people were telling me he was nothing and then he wins the NABA title and now is fighting for a world title,” said Hussein, who won a six round points decision over Morales fighting at 125lbs.

A favourite of promoter Kieran O’Connor, Hussein is looking to put on a great show for the Sydney fans this Friday night. “Hopefully the fans will see a more aggressive but tighter defensive fighter. I can’t afford just to win,” said Hussein.

“If you are just winning and the crowd are not satisfied, it won’t do your career any good. You have to look good in winning and a knockout win can only help you. I won’t be out there loading up, but I’ll be going for it.”

1996 Australian Olympian Hussein Hussein, 16-0 (13), will face Roongchai Muangsurin, 11-8 (3), from Thailand, over eight rounds while heavyweight Kali Meehan, 23-1 (18), makes his return to the ring after his first loss in England when he faces former Lennox Lewis opponent Justin Fortune, 15-7-2 (8), over 10 rounds.

Australian cruiserweight champion Daniel Rowsell, 15-1-2 (6), will face Paul Smallman, 17-13-1 (11), for the vacant PABA cruiserweight title while Jason De Lisle faces Peter Kariuki in a highly anticipated rematch from “Respect 1” at light-heavyweight.

Also on the card, Team Fenech’s Danny Green at super-middleweight; Peter Graham vs Simon Patterson at cruiserweight and Team Fenech’s latest signing, Rubin Rabah vs Mick Kilmurry. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketek and the action will be televised live around Australia on Fox Sports, commencing at 7.30pm.
