By Paul Upham: The lethal punches of “Deadly” Robert Medley and a pair of slippery shoes stopped Aswin Cabuy in his tracks for a TKO loss at the beginning of four rounds at junior middleweight on Friday night at The Cube in Campbelltown, Australia, headlining a Grange Old School Boxing promotion.
In the opening seconds of round 1, 34 year-old Cabuy 11-8-1 (4) from Bekasi, Indonesia slipped over in his own corner without a punch landing. It was clear that his boxing shoes had little to no tread.
After a number of slips by the visitor, there was a long break mid-round while Cabuy’s corner put tape around his shoes.
In round 2, hard punches from 28 year-old Medley 25-2 (17) hurt Cabuy and forced him to hold. Continued holding then resulted in referee Anthony Shipley deducting one point from the Indonesian.
Cabuy was down on the canvas in round 3 from a knockdown. Cabuy complained that it was another slip. At the end of the round, the referee directed Cabuy’s corner to take his boxing shoes off and to compete barefoot. “Next slip and I will disqualify you,” he warned.
Cabuy refused and at the opening bell for round 4, he sat on his stool and would not compete. Referee Shipley waved off the contest.
In the main support bout, hot junior welterweight prospect Lenny Zappavigna won a unanimous eight round points decision over Rey Anton Olarte. A constant body attack from 21 year-old Zappavigna 20-0 (14) saw a brave Olarte unable to get into the fight.
