Picking a Melbourne Cup winner with Tszyu vs. Judah

01-Nov-10 10:47
Shocking and Kostya Tszyu
By Paul Upham: True story. In November 2009, Kostya Tszyu’s website webmaster James came upon a new way to pick a Melbourne Cup horse race winner.

The theory went that as the Melbourne Cup that year was held on 3 November 2009, the eighth anniversary of Kostya Tszyu’s stunning 2nd round boxing knockout win over American Zab Judah, the memory of that fight could help pick the race winner.

Surveying the field, the names of the horses were assessed for their relation to Tszyu, Judah and what transpired that night in Las Vegas, USA at the MGM Grand.

After much deliberation, James settled on “Shocking” – it was a stunning right hand knockout punch - and “Crime Scene” – for what the new champion did to his opponent and possibly relating to Judah’s post fight chair throwing and fronting of the referee – to best describe Tszyu’s win over Judah to become undisputed super lightweight world champion.

Amazingly, the prophecy came true and “Shocking” 1st and “Crime Scene” 2nd led the field home. Those Tszyu fans who heeded the mystical advice celebrated like it was 3 November 2001 all over again.

While this years’ Melbourne Cup horse race will be held on 2 November 2010, it is seemingly close enough for the legacy of the Tszyu-Judah fight to weave its magic once again.

Scanning the field, there are a number of horses that could receive the magic touch of Tszyu.

Last year’s winner No.1 SHOCKING is the defending champion and a contender once again.

No.8 AMERICAIN, (well, Kostya did cane Zab) and No.7 SHOOT OUT are possibilities.

No.5 ILLUSTRIOUS BLUE is another (the Tszyu-Judah fight had a lot of hype going into it) along with No.21 RED RULER, considering Tszyu’s Russian heritage.

Maybe it could be the “Z” connection, No.4 ZIPPING or No.17 ZAVITE?

Or what about after what happened with last year’s picks, it set a (No.20) PRECEDENCE?

Digging a little deeper, Tszyu’s favourite number is 13 – then what of the chances of No.13 MANIGHAR?

One more Tszyu family connection perhaps? Tuesday 2 November 2010 is the 16th birthday of Tszyu’s first son Timophey Tszyu which could translate to No.16 PROFOUND BEAUTY. Well, the knockout of Judah which saw him do the “chicken dance” was a thing of beauty – at least to Tszyu’s fans it was

Any of those horses named could be the ultimate winner.

Kostya Tszyu fans should make their own interpretation, but after looking deep into the Tszyu-Judah crystal ball, this years tips for yours truly will be:

No.1 SHOCKING
No.8 AMERICAIN
No.7 SHOOT OUT

Good luck with your selections on Tuesday for the horse race that stops a nation.
