releases December ratings

By Paul Upham: The World Boxing Council has released its December ratings with the following questions arising and changes of note.

1: At heavyweight, Jameel McCline entered the ratings at No.12 after his win over the No.6 rated Lance Whitaker and Oliver McCall jumped up 12 places to No.5 after his knockout win over No.11 Henry Akinwande. Did McCall deserve to move up so high into the top ten and should McCline be further up the list?

2: Howard Eastman went oh so close to winning the vacant WBA middleweight title against William Joppy in November on the Rahman-Lewis II undercard. Surely the Englishman deserves a place somewhere in the WBC’s top 30 middleweights?

3: Giving 100% in every fight you contest must not rate too highly with the WBC if Micky Ward’s rating at No.29 in the junior welterweights is any indication. Ward has actually dropped three spots since last month’s ratings. Now going up the list, who doesn’t Ward beat?

These are just a few questions that need to be asked. We will endeavour to have them answered by the WBC. Here are the movers and shakers for the month of December 2001.
