Tszyu closely watching Mosley-Forrest

By Paul Upham: With one eye on a possible move to 147lbs for an appealing super-fight further down the track, undisputed junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu will be watching very closely when WBC welterweight king Sugar Shane Mosley faces undefeated Vernon Forrest this Saturday night in New York on HBO.

“This will be a great fight, very exciting and definitely a fight I am looking very forward to watching,” said Tszyu in a statement released through his website KTboxing.com. “Everyone knows who Shane Mosley is, high on the list of pound-for-pound best boxers, very quick, excellent experience, his record speaks for itself. Shane has fought and beaten some great fighters including Oscar De La Hoya, he has also gone up in weight from 135-147 pounds and dominates the divisions he is in, a true champion.”

Tszyu has first hand knowledge of Forrest having beaten the former IBF champion as an amateur on points in the final at the 1991 World Championships in Sydney.

”Vernon Forrest is also an excellent fighter who has never really had the opportunity to show the world how good he is. Vernon has a height advantage and he is clever enough to know how to use this advantage. I know that Vernon will be giving it everything he has,” said Tszyu.

”What makes this fight even more interesting is the fact that Vernon beat Shane in the amateurs and Shane is very eager to avenge this loss. In 1991 I fought and easily beat Vernon in the amateurs, I have not had the opportunity to speak with him since, but I know that he has become a very good trainer and is very focused on winning.”

Tszyu is also looking forward to the IBF eliminator between No.3 Ben Tackie and No.4 Teddy Reid this Friday night on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights, which will determine his next opponent for May 18. “It’s very premature to say where Kostya’s next fight will be held,” said promoter Vlad Warton.

“We are looking both here in Australia and over in the USA. I think Tackie and Reid will be a reasonably close and tough fight. They are well-matched. Kostya’s opponent will not really make any difference on the location. It’s really more a commercial consideration.”

If Tszyu’s next fight is not possible in Australia, both Warton and the undisputed champion will definitely look at bringing one of his other proposed bouts “Down Under” in 2002.

“Kostya has expressed a very strong interest in fighting here in Australia. I would not mind doing a great promotion here of a big magnitude. It’s all about economics and being able to work it out,” said Warton. “Certainly we are very interested in doing that in the future if he doesn’t happen this time.”
