Why does Lauryn Eagle want to be a boxer?

By Paul Upham: Water skiing world champion Lauryn Eagle wants to be a boxer. The blue eyed, blonde haired beauty will have her second professional match as a fighter on the Daniel Geale-Roman Karmazin undercard in Homebush, Sydney on Sunday afternoon 31 October 2010.

Such a devastating beauty is Lauryn Eagle there was even recent aspirations for a run at a Miss Universe crown. But that is on hold now. Which prompts the obvious question, why would she want to risk her memorable features to be a boxer?

“Everyone asks me that,” she replies. “I don’t see it as a fight to me. I see it as a mental and a physical challenge. People close to me know that I am extremely driven, I am extremely ambitious and anything I set my mind to, I do it. I am a very physical person and I push myself physically to my potential. I love boxing and I want to go all the way with it. I’d love people to come on the journey with me.”

Working closely with trainer and former world champion Gairy St Clair, advised by Jeff Fenech and having sparred with reigning world champions Vic Darchinyan and Lovemore Ndou, Eagle appears to be taking her career very seriously indeed.

“My right hand is a tribute to my water skiing because of my arm strength,” explained Eagle. “The more I do boxing the more I have fallen in love with it.”

22 year-old Australian born Eagle 1-0 (1) will face 34 year-old Christina Tai 4-8 (1) from New Zealand at welterweight.

For her many male admirers, let’s just hope Eagle shows lots of boxing talent and avoids a broken nose.
