Latest Scandinavian News: Johansson anniversary

By Teddy Stenmark: An amateur event in Kungälv on the Swedish west-coast on September 14th celebrated the 50th anniversary of Ingemar “Ingo” Johansson’s classic knockout over No. 1 contender Eddie Machen at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg September 14th 1958. Yours truly was present and got to see some nice amateur boxing action on this very special day. Three strong heavyweights from Denmark visited and gave the Swedes a lot of work. National champions, David Loy (2008) and Martin Axelsson (2007) both won their respective matches but was forced to go the full distance both of them (Loy defeated Martin Grön, while southpaw Axelsson out-pointed Morten Fruegaard). K1-fighter, Jonathan Gromark, originally from Gothenburg but now residing in Stockholm, was the third Swedish heavyweight spicing up the show. He won his fight as well over his Dane (Kasper Fruegaard) making it a Swedish success-trio.

Former WBC junior middleweight title challenger, Paolo Roberto keeps busy. Roberto has of course a steady job as blow-by-blow boxing and MMA-commentator for Swedish TV Station “TV4 Sport” , and also makes appearances as a speaker (will for instance be present at the "Book and Library Convention" in Gothenburg ( 25-28 of September) promoting his own Italian Cookbook “Mina Fastrars mat” (translation – “My aunt’s food “ which is a charming book that combines recipes with interesting anecdotes from Roberto’s visits to his roots in Naples.

It was interesting to read somewhere on the net that Naim Terbunja’s opponent from the Beijing Olympics , two time World champion Matvey Korobov from Russia has decided to turn pro in the US ( with Top Rank Boxing – manager, Cameron Dunkin), probably a wise decision from him. Four more years is a long wait for the next games, and maybe, just maybe, Terbunja could get a rematch with him in the professionals if he ever decides to turn pro.
