Latest Swedish Boxing News

By Teddy Stenmark: We are in August already, and the Olympics is just around the corner, as a Swede I am particularly proud that we as the only nation in Scandinavia has managed to qualify two fighters for the Beijing Games, Naim Terbunja middleweight and Kennedy Katende at light heavyweight. The pair have recently been preparing at the Sugar Ray Boxing Gym in Fukuoka, Japan, sparring with among others German, Rene Krause. According to the reports both men are looking very good.

It was announced recently that Swedish heavyweight Attila Levin will be facing 29-year old Russian , Evgeni Orlov (8-2-1, 5 KO) at the Pugnus promoted card at “Nöjesfabriken” in Karlstad, Sweden on September 5th. Two more exciting heavyweights will be on the program, former WBO champion, Ray Mercer (35-7-1, 26 KO:s) who takes on Dutchman, Richel Hersisia (30-2, 24 KO:s), and Minnesota heavyweight ( with a Swedish connection - his grandfather was from Sweden), Joey Abell who steps in with former IBF world cruiserweight champion, Alfred “ Ice” Cole. In addition to that female welterweight, Anna Ingman (4-0, 1 KO) recently free of her contract with former employer Live Nation ( formerly EMA Telstar) is tentatively booked to face 21 year old American, Olivia Fonseca (2-1-2, 1 KO), former IBF junior welterweight challenger, Allan Vester is set to fight Tanzanian, Pascal Kimaru Bruno ( 11-13-2). Those are the fights that are ready so far, more opponents for the following fighters; Reidar Walstad ( super bantamweight), Giullian Ilie, Romania (light heavyweight), and debutant Stefan Schallengruber ( light heavyweight), are likely to clear within a couple of weeks time.

Two Swedish based Ugandan fighters, Peter Semo (junior welterweight) and Abdu Tebazalwa (featherweight) suffered defeats in Piatra Neamt, Romania on August 1st. The former lost a 12 round verdict (for the NABA title) at the hands of undefeated Canadian based , Ionut Dan Ion but did a good job lasting the full distance absorbing the Romanian’s hard punches, and even managing to come on pretty strong towards the end. Semo lost an eight rounder to Viorel Simion.

Reidar Walstad warmed up for the above mentioned show in Karlstad, Sweden by nicking a four round verdict over Sumaila Badu of Ghana in Watford august 1st.

Danish super middleweight Mads Larsen and Finnish middle Amin Asikainen both have important fights coming up on the 30th of this month, Larsen in Germany and Asikainen at home in Tampere, Finland.
