Vargas, cousin of former champion brothers Adan and Goyo, ran his record up to 12-0 (9), while Rodriguez lost his 0, and went to 14-1-1 (6). The card took place at the Desert Diamond Casino in Tuscon, Arizona.

The bout, which took place at the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, was televised by NBC.
