By Don Smith: On February 25, 2005, the bodies of Celia "Sally" Carbajal and her live in boyfriend Gerry Best were found outside their apartment at Coconut Groves complex in West Phoenix. They were shot at close range, in the head, and she died instantly while he passed away enroute to the nearest hospital . Phoenix Police ruled out robbery as a motive and began to focus on celebrated boxing trainer Danny Carbajal, her estranged husband, who had managed to manipulate the system and obtain a 2004 fraudulent divorce without the consent or knowledge of his wife and mother of their two daughters.
Sally was furious when she found out and despite her open act of infidelity, she wanted a full share of the money and property accumulated during their marriage even though the bulk of their estate was acquired with money belonging to Michael Carbajal, Danny’s brother and Hall of Fame boxer. What she didn’t know was that Danny, with the help of their gold digging daughters, was forging quit claim deeds to make sure Sally Carbajal got zilch, zero , nothing .
Ironically, Mrs. Carbajal was scheduled to meet with a divorce attorney the day of her execution to discuss her scheduled court appearance on Monday February 28, 2005. There is no statue of limitations on murder and Danny Carbajal remains a person of interest in the investigation. The murder weapon was a 22 caliber firearm.
Danny vehemently denies any involvement in the death of his wife but he did plead guilty in September of 2008 in Superior Court Judge Andrew Klein’s courtroom where he was sentenced to serve 4 1/2 years in Florence Prison for felony theft and fraud. During his sentence hearing, Danny told Judge Klein he made a mistake but he never never apologized to his brother. Five time World Boxing Champion Michael Carbajal testified against his brother whom he once trusted with his physical and financial well being. He once was asked if he had to worry about money to which he replied..."I don’t have to, I’ve got Danny and Sally to look after me". Michael reportedly made almost 8 million dollars in the ring. He openly sobbed on the witness stand. In October 2007, Michael filed a lawsuit against his brother.
Danny Carbajal was released from Florence Prison in July of 2011. Josephine and Celia his two daughters (characterized as co-conspirators) were there to greet him. On December 1, 2011, Danny, his daughters and other defendants linked to theft of Michael Carbajal’s property met in Superior Court Judge Oberbilling’s courtroom in Phoenix and were ordered to sign over deeds to Michael for the stolen properties in dispute. Also, Danny and his accomplices were ordered to pay all of the property taxes due on the said properies. The group has done nothing to obey the Court’s directive...just the opposite.
On December 8 of 2011, Danny Carbajal signed "Special Warranty Deed" from Carbajal’s Ninth Street Gym Property to "Sheriff’s Youth Assistance Foundation", a controversial non profit organization that receives financial sponsorship from the Office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Tom Harper, a director with the group , told the Arizona Republic that the group jumped at the opportunity to accept Danny Carbajal’s offer. Harper would not elaborate on how Danny Carbajal became aware of the Sheriff’s Youth Assistance Foundation, telling Arizona Republic staff writer JJ Henssley on May 31 that revealing the connection could jeopardize attorney-client privilege. Supporters of Michael plan to lodge a complaint with the Arizona State Bar Association against Harper whose law firm, in the past, has dealt with Danny Carbajal. Harper points out that it was other lawyers in the firm not him who worked with Danny. When asked if the issue would come up during the next board meeting, Harper quipped: "probably not". Some of Michael Carbajal’s friends want to attend the Sheriff’’s Youth Assistance Foundation Board Meeting but can’t find time and date posted.
Writers aren’t attorneys; so, a professional lawyer was contacted and after studying the issue, he said Danny has no legal right to the gym property and Michael should win the expected legal battle.. The problem Michael will have is taking care of the tax liens against the property and legal fees that will be required to fight off Harper and other potential suitors. The boxing community is rooting for Michael because Ninth Street Gym in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona is where it all started for Michael and the facility is considered an Arizona Sports Landmark.. FBI is looking into the matter and expect Carbajal attorney David Derickso, to file a lawsuit on behalf of Michael.
Amateur Boxer Alfonso Olvera was born in Nogales, Mexico and migrated to the United States the old fashioned way...legally. As a kid he played soccer but he never boxed until he took up the sport last year at the age of 21. Earlier this year, the 22 year old Alfonso advanced to the quarter finals of the 141 lb division of the Golden Gloves National Tournament before elimination. He fights out of the Neutral Corner Gym in Tucson, Arizona and his coach Brad Carlton raves about his work ethic. Alfonso, father of two, may turn pro next year after a few more tournaments... good kid, best of luck: stay tuned.
Former two time World Boxing Champion Jorge Paez was a hit at the Iron Boy Promotions press conference on June 8 at Filiberto’s Mexican Food on Baseline in Tempe. He was on hand to support his son Azriel Paez who will fight Michael Salcito from Eloy Arizona in a 140 pound 4 round contest on June 16th at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Jorge posed for pictures, signed autographs and of course; clowned around. This show represents the third boxing show presented at the Celebrity by Iron Boy and CEO Robert Vargas told reporters to expect a few surprises this time around. For example, no automatic wins for the red corner. Roberto said some boxing fans sensed a hometown bias at the last event but Roberto said that wasn’t true and he predicted an upset or two on June 16. He didn’t name names but fight fans like to see a genuine upset upset or two...on a card. No offense, Timothy Bradley! The rest of card reads as follows: Victor Castro vs. Jorge Marquez 135 lbs, Thomas Valdez vs. Alan Sanchez 132, Abel Ramos vs. Jeremiah Torres 140, Chris Lopez vs. Jazzma Hogue 128, Carlos Castro vs. Tony Green 122, Antonio Moreno vs. Saul Benitez 148, Marcos Medinas vs. Arturo Brambila welterweights and two amateur bouts: David Benavidez vs. TBA and Mario Esparza vs. Wilbur Lopez. St. Mary’s Food Bank Representatives will be on hand to collect food donations for the needy...please be generous. Next Iron Boy show is scheduled for sometime in August and Mario Esparza is scheduled to make his pro debut on the card. Ring Announcer Ralph Velez tried his best to explain why this Iron Boy Event was being advertised as the Beginning when in actuality, this show is the third of five promised by the fledging promotions company.....maybe the Yiddish version is clearer. Ralph, Arizona’s best ring announcer, emceed the press conference and will do the same for the weigh-in....Until next time
