British Boxing Is Set For A Golden 2013

By Clive Bernath: With the introduction of two new dedicated boxing channels in the UK in 2012 to rival Sky Sports, Primetime and Channel 5, the profile of boxing in the UK could not be stronger right now. Yes the Noble Art in the British isles is looking pretty good for 2013 and the recent announcement that Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions is applying for a promoters licence in Britain is further proof that our great sport is flourishing.

According to a report in British newspaper The Daily Mail Golden Boy Chief Executive Richard Schaefer has confirmed the promotional company that turns over $200 million a year will venture into the UK and are engaged in talks with British Olympic medallists Anthony Joshua, Luke Campbell and Anthony Ogogo.

’There is fantastic opportunity for us in the UK,” Schaefer told The Daily Mail. “I have always said the British boxing fans are the most passionate in the world.

’Over here some people could hardly believe that Ricky Hatton sold out 20,000 tickets for his comeback fight before he even named his opponent.

’I love London and I will be spending a lot more time over there in the future.

’I am promising to help your Olympians maximise their potential and develop into big, successful stars. For that, I will be taking fighters under my wing personally for the first time.’

Sky Sports has pretty much been the main boxing broadcaster in the UK over the last 15 years but in the last couple Box Nation, Primetime and Channel 5 have chipped in to boost the sport’s profile. And last Friday Loaded tv announced their arrival by televising LIVE the British light middleweight title fight between champion Brian Rose and Sam Webb. Now Oscar’s Golden Boy promotions have crossed the pond in a bid to boost boxing’s profile further. There is going to be a lot of boxing to choose from in 2013 and I for one am looking forward sampling as much of it as I can.
