By Matthew Hurley: The SecondsOut pound-for-pound list for January 2015 consists of only one significant change. Although pound-for-pound lists are mythical and certainly debatable, inactivity counts against a fighter, no matter how talented, almost as much as a loss.
In December we dropped super middleweight champion Andre Ward for inactivity. Ward has not fought since November of 2013 and still has nothing scheduled. He remains off the list.
Mikey Garcia, previously ranked at number ten has gone the way of Ward. He has not fought since January of 2014 and has nothing scheduled so far for 2015.
Taking his place is super middleweight Carl Froch. Froch, who has fought consistently tough competition, and has hinted at retirement, has a resume that demands respect. And it says here he will fight again.
Two fighters, Tim Bradley and Guillermo Rigendeaux, both found themselves in unexpectedly difficult fights against Diego Gabriel Chaves and Hisashi Amagasa respectively. Bradley, who has been the recipient of a bogus decision victory over Manny Pacquiao and a close decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov was held to a controversial draw. He deserved the win so he remains at number six.
Rigendeaux suffered two knockdowns in an entertaining scrap with Amagasa. The talented Cuban showed heart and a champion’s poise in coming back and taking out the tough Amagasa in the eleventh round. He remains at number five. Hopefully he can set up a fight with fellow super bantamweight titlist Leo Santa Cruz.
The list for January is as follows:
1/ Floyd Mayweather – welterweight / junior middleweight
2/ Manny Pacquiao – welterweight
3/ Wladimir Klitschko – heavyweight
4/ Gennady Golovkin – middleweight
5/ Guillermo Rigendeaux – super bantamweight
6/ Timothy Bradley – welterweight
7/ Juan Manuel Marquez – welterweight
8/ Roman Gonzalez – flyweight
9/ Sergey Kovalev – light heavyweight
10/ Carl Froch – super middleweight
Secondsout.com will provide monthly updates to its mythical pound for pound list and we welcome and comments.
