Shane Mosley Announces Retirement

By Clive Bernath: According to reports on the internet former three weight world champion and future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley has retired from the sport of boxing.

The 40 year-old has looked a spent force over the last three or four years and after dropping a near shutout 12 round decision to unbeaten young Mexican Saul Alvarez last month it is not surprising that ‘Sugar’ Shane has now decided to quit the ring.

Mosley’s friend Hassan Abdulrahim told RingTV "Shane has officially retired, and he’s going to go into the promotional side of the sport. Shane is going to be working with his son, who has a promising amateur career."

Mosley won his first world title in 1997, out-pointing Phillip Holiday to claim the IBF lightweight title. Mosley defended the lightweight crown eight times before moving up to welterweight to challenge Oscar De Hoya for the WBC welterweight crown. Mosley scored a split decision win over ‘Golden Boy’ and successfully defended the title three times before losing his crown and unbeaten record to fellow American Vernon Forrest via unanimous decision in January 2002 A couple of fights later Mosley successfully moved up to light middleweight to win the WBC title from De La Hoya in a rematch in September 2003 but lost the title some six months later to emerging star Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright.

Mosley, from Pomana, California, finishes up with a record of 46 wins, 8 defeats and one draw. In a career that spanned 19 years and included battles with the like of Forrest, De LA Hoya, Wright, Miguel Cotto Floyd MAyweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, he was never stopped and heard the final bell 55 times.
