Richard Abril has promised ‘to put on a show’ when he makes his long awaited first defence of his WBA lightweight title against unbeaten Ugandan Sharif “The Lion” Bogere at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday(March 2).

Abril vs Bogere is the main event on a Showtime televised card that also features southpaw Gary Russell Jr. taking on Russian boxer Vyacheslav Gusev in a 10-round featherweight bout.

Speaking about facing Bogere in his first title defence on Thursday Abril said at the final press conference: “I’ve waited for this fight a long time because of the postponements, so I’m happy we’re just two days away.

“I don’t really understand why Bogere talks so much (on Twitter), but I can tell you one thing: on Saturday, I am not going to run.

“I respect Bogere, I respect all fighters, but I’m just saying let’s put on a good show for the fans.

“He’s a lion, but I’m a tiger, and the real king of the jungle is the tiger.”

Whilst Abril is super confident Bogere is determined not to waste his opportunity of fighting for a world title. “I knew if I stayed positive my time would come and now it’s almost here,” said Bogere. “I want to thank Golden Boy and my team for making this fight happen.

“On Saturday night, I’m going to take care of business. I’m 100 percent prepared and ready to go. On Saturday, I’ll become champion of the world.’’

In the main featured bout Gary Russell takes on Vyacheslav Gusev and whilst he scored an impressive knock out win against Roberto Castaneda last time out he will not be putting too much pressure on himself to do it again.

“I think I trained for six and a half or seven weeks, so I am definitely ready to go,” said Russell. “I’m looking forward to Saturday, fighting again and fighting on Showtime again.

“I had a good, exciting knockout in my last fight, but I don’t put pressure on myself to duplicate that kind of fight. My job is to perform and win fights.”

Russlell Jr may well be the favorite to claim his 22nd straight win as a professional but Gusev has stated that he is not just there make up the numbers: “I came all the way from Russia for this fight and I’m here to put on a really great fight. I’ve trained very hard for this. I know Russell is a good fighter. I’m excited about the opportunity that I’m getting,” said Gusev.
