Latest Inductees Elected To NBHOF

By Ron Valderrama: This past Saturday, the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame held its Fifth Induction Ceremony at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

It was indeed, a stellar event. This year’s inductees included: Thomas "Hitman" Hearns, Erik "El Terrible" Morales, Salvador Sanchez, Michael Spinks, Michael Carbajal, Lucia Rijker, Leon Spinks, Richie Sandoval, Ken Norton, Rafael Garcia, Debbie Munch, Mel Greb, Dr. Elias Ghanem, and Davey Pearl.

Founded in 2012 by Rich Marotta, the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame has grown to more than 80 members. This year, the organization has appointed Michelle Corrales-Lewis, the widow of Diego Corrales as President and CEO.

Hall of Fame Broadcaster, Al Bernstein, and Crystina Poncher, best known for her commentary with Top Rank served as emcees.

This year’s crop of inductees, like so many before them, played important roles in shaping the boxing landscape and made boxing history.

Boxing is many things, but this night, it brought together champions and legends. Some are a shell of what they once were, some have passed on, but their legacy is preserved forever in the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.

Boxing has changed over the years, new stars, and new legends are being made right now. It was good to see fighters like Thomas Hearns. being introduced by Sugar Ray Leonard, Erik Morales introduced by Marco Antonio Barrera. All bitter rivals at one time in the ring, friends, and brothers today.

Female boxer, Lucia Rijker was also inducted, her career produced some exciting bouts indeed.

The Spinks brothers, Leon and Michael have etched their place in boxing history. Leon, best known for beating Muhammad Ali and claiming the heavyweight title was introduced by rapper, Flavor Flav. Leon’s health may not be great, but his face was filled with gleam when he was inducted. Michael, a two-weight division champion was all smiles, telling the crowd how his mother was a big influence in his career. Secondsout.com had an opportunity to ask Michael Spinks his opinion about the upcoming bout between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. Michael said, "I don’t really have an opinion other than Mayweather will win." He smiled and left it at that.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was when Al Bernstein introduced Michael Carbajal, the first fighter lighter than a featherweight to earn $1 million for a fight and retire as a champion. Carbajal would turn out to be one of Top Rank’s greatest achievements, producing some great and exciting bouts. Oddly, it would be another inductee, Richie Sandoval, who would convince Bob Arum to sign Carbajal. Michael spoke about his career, most notably, how he loved the sport, and how proud he was for never getting knocked out. It’s also worth mentioning that without going into detail, Michael was recently victorious in a bitter legal battle over his famed 9th Street Gym.
