Vasyl Lomachenko,8-1-(6), made a routine defense of his WBO super featherweight title at the MGM National Harbour in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Saturday night by scoring a ninth round tko win over Jason Sosa,20-2-4-(15).
Lomachenko dominated the fight from start to finish as he rained in the punches at will, causing extensive damage to Sosa’s eyes from the second round onwards.
It looked as though Lomachenko was going to stop Sosa in the eighth round but the super tough Sosa managed to survive. Lomachenko continued to hand out a beating in the ninth and again survived but this time Sosa’s trainer had seen enough and pulled his man out after nine completed rounds.
After the fight a victorious Lomachenko said: “I came to show my “High Tech” style and to prove that I am the best fighter in the world.
Speaking after the fight about pulling his fighter, Sosa’s trainer Raul Rivas said: “It was the accumulation of punches, and the fact that I didn’t want to see him get hurt, that I stopped the fight”.
On the same card of the HBO televised event WBO cruiserweight champ, Aleksandr Usyk went 12-0-(10) by clearly out-pointing Mike Hunter,12-1-(8), over 12 rounds. Hunter put up a stern test in the first half of the contest but Usyk stepped up a gear after the halfway mark to hurt Hunter a number of times and scored a knock down in the 12th round to make sure of victory. The was 117-110 on all three judges cards.
