SecondsOut Team Picks: Golovkin Vs Macklin

This week’s big fight prediction from SecondsOut’s army or writersis the WBA middleweight title fight between champion Gennady Golovkin and challenger Mathew Macklin at the MGM Grand, Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut on Saturday night.

See below who our army of correspondents think will be victorious

As much as I’d love to see Macklin pull off a historic win I just can’t see him beating a prime and hard punching champion like Golovkin. Macklin is a tremendously brave man and that will keep him in with a chance but sooner or later Golovkin will break him down, leaving the referee to step in and save him.

Macklin’s chances of winning this fight are very slim. However, I respect him for taking on Golovkin and his awkward, lacking good school style might create some sort of drama in this fight which I believe will see Macklin finished by round six, bloodied, shocked, still not giving up, just having the fight stopped. He is no match for Golovkin. What this fight is going to be good for is to see to what extent Sergio Martinez is a jumping joke compared Golovkin, the hottest middleweight of our age and the most exciting boxer from the former Soviet Union today. We all are looking forward to see this fight, even though pretty much everyone understands to what extend Macklin is in trouble, with all my respect to the kid.

You can’t help but admire the brass of Matthew Macklin. Gaining fans with every fight and wanting only the best opposition, even in defeat Macklins stock rises. Never mind Martinez and Sturm. His 10 round loss in a war with then British champion Jamie Moore is as dramatic as you’ll ever see. Despite the qualities of Macklin though, grit, knockout power, I see Saturday as another fight in which his stock may have to rise in an exciting defeat. Gennady Golovkin is as impressive an operator as I’ve seen in a while, and the accuracy and regularity of his punches should have taken their toll on the tough Macklin by the final rounds for a stoppage. Then again, I didn’t think Malignaggi would last the distance against Broner last week.

Gennady Golovkin has had 8 fights since 2010 that were scheduled for 12-rounds, the potential for a total of 96-rounds. Golovkin has won all of his 12-round fights, needing only a total 33 rounds to do so. All of his opponents have been knocked down or knocked out in all of his 12-round fights with exception of Gabriel Rosado, who battled Golovkin for 7-rounds. Rosado would later say that Golovkin has unbelievable power behind his punches. Golovkin will face a tough Matthew Macklin in this scheduled 12-round fight. It has been reported that Macklin had the best training camp of his career, and has been on weight for 3 weeks. Without a doubt, Macklin can fight, and he will have to fight, he must be prepared to throw and receive some hard shots. Golovkin is a master with his combination shots, utilizing his power to work the body and head shots. It looks to have all the makings of a great fight, but this bout should not go past round-7, that’s when Golovkin will take out a crafty Macklin by way of TKO.

Gennady Golovkin is the future of the middleweight division. His resume of opponents may not include the best of names by this point but his punching power and overall ability has many convinced that he is the best middleweight out there. Matthew Macklin is a solid opponent for Golovkin to test himself against. He’s been in with Martinez and a few others over the years that will more than likely tell us just how good Golovkin is or can be going forward. I think the early rounds will be exciting and as the fight progresses Golovkin will eventually wear down and stop Macklin inside the distance.

Macklin is hungry and this will be his third and probably final chance to win a belt. He is tough, strong and knows what he has to do against Golovkin. He has extended Martinez and probably beat Sturm, that’s enough to say he puts on the pressure and brings home the title by decision.

I am glad to see Golovkin taking on a top-rated middleweight, who is a real live dog. Golovkin’s power is undeniable, but we have seen its impact almost universally against no-hopers,has-beens, and junior middleweights. His punch arsenal is well educated and he going to present a lot of trouble for Macklin with his greater speed and combination punching. However, GGG is there to be hit. He does not use a lot of head movement and his chin is open while throwing. Macklin may have already hit his peak unfortunately. His best showings against the elites have ended in robbery and a KO loss after a great start. I am not so sure he has enough left to defeat a top fighter if that is in fact what Golovkin is. So, Macklin, who appears in excellent shape, needs to make it a point to be the one who asks questions in this contest. He will need to test Golovkin’s chin early, but save his stamina for a long, grueling fight if that’s what it turns out to be. He needs to attack Golovkin’s body and answer back after he takes a big shot. Golovkin has been shown little resistance and has never found himself in deep water. If Macklin can do to Golovkin what Marco Antonio Rubio did to David Lemieux a couple years back, we may find some real answers to these questions. We know Golovkin has power and good hands, but we don’t know if he has elite stamina and a world class heart. I expect Macklin will find this out for us, but I don’t expect to see him standing at the final bell.
