WBA junior flyweight world champion Giovanni Segura retained his title in exciting fashion on Saturday night with a wild third round stoppage over game challenger Walter Tello at the Discoteca El Alrbrije in Acapulco, Mexico.

Defending his title for the third time, Segura 23-1-1 (19) set a frantic pace from the opening bell and rocked his challenger with a thumping head shot early in the round. Tello 14-4 (6) unfancied coming into the contest, shot back ferociously and engaged in a fiery back and forth with the champion throughout the short duration of the contest.

Although both men had their moments, Segura looked the more likely and connected with the more telling punches – most notably with his right hook and he stunned the 23-year-old late in the second round with that punch. Tello, hurt and seemingly on his last legs, dug deep and forced his fists into action, catching Segura with enough mustard to see out the three minutes.

Tello emerged for the third on shaky legs and Segura compounded the damage with a massive assault, sending his jellied opponent to the canvas twice before referee Luis Pabon stepped in to save him from further punishment.

Time of stoppage: 1:56 RD3

Undercard

Lightweight contender Urbano Antillon made quick work of Luis Arceo after a cut shortened the scheduled ten rounder by seven frames.

Antillon 27-1 (20), coming off his first professional loss last summer against Miguel Acosta, was in full control of the contest when a nasty gash, caused by a punch, meant that Arceo 22-10-2 (15) was unable to continue, resulting in a third round stoppage victory for the Mexican.

Time of stoppage: 2:25 RD3

In a welterweight contest, Omar Chavez enjoyed an early shower as he scored a one round knockout over hapless local boy Eugenio Lopez in the opening round of a scheduled six.

Chavez 20-0-1 (15) ended the fight midway through the round after a thumping left hook sent Lopez 12-16-1 (8) crashing and prompting the referee to immediately stop the contest.

Time of stoppage: 1:41 RD1
