By Ron Valderrama: Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios will battle Mike "Mile High" Alvarado, in a WBO light welterweight eliminator bout on Oct. 13, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. Presented by Top Rank. The event will be part of a double header main event which will also feature Nonito Donaire vs. Toshiaki Nishioka.
Rios and Alvarado took part in a conference call hosted by Top Rank on Wed., Oct. 4 for members of the media. Top Rank’s Bob Arum started the conference by saying that this fight has the potential for fight of the year.
Alvarado’s manager, Henry Delgado said they are excited about this fight, and to expect a lot of action.
Getting to the point, Mike Alvarado started out by saying "It’s been a long road, I’m happy where I am. I’m excited for this fight."
Alvarado is the No. 1 contender going into this bout, his record currently stands at 33 wins, 0 losses, 23 of his wins come by way of knockout.
When asked if he was underrated Alvarado replied "My boxing is definitely underrated, I’m not just a slugger, I have learned a lot about myself in the ring."
Alvarado was also asked to comment on Rios’ weight issues,: "I’m thinking in my mind that Brandon is training as best he possibly can."
Mike Alvarado is 32-years-old, when asked about his age, Alvarado said, "I still feel young in the game, and I’m ready to just perform and to show it, I’ve learned a lot about myself in that ring."
Brandon Rios is making his debut as a light. welterweight against Mike Alvarado. Rios is trained by the legendary, Robert Garcia. His record currently stands at 30-0-1, 22 KOs.
Garcia said that Brandon is a natural 140-pounder, "He’s so big, so strong that he’ll be comfortable at 140."
Brandon Rios begins the conference by stating, "I expect a tough fight, It’s gonna be an exciting fight because we both have the same styles." Rios continued by saying, "Alvarado fights the way I fight, it will be a war, because I don’t change my style."
Questioned on power, Rios answers, "I was 140 making 135, I’ve always had the power. It’s just I was able to make 135, my power’s gonna carry me wherever I go."
The fight will be televised on HBO Boxing After Dark, Saturday, Oct. 13. Check local listings for start time in your area.
