The unbeaten Ohio fighter then spoke of his desire to achieve greater feats in the sport as well as to add to not only his own legacy, but also to that of his hometown of Cincinnati.
“A victory on Saturday can help me cross over into a different world. It’s my biggest test. I know what I’m going up against in DeMarco. I’ll be ready and I know he will be ready, too. The legacy I hope to create is very important because it always starts locally. You can’t have a big name in the world without being known in your hometown. I’m hoping to go worldwide. I’d like someone on Venus to know my name.”
His opponent from Tijuana acknowledged the task that awaits him on Saturday evening at the Boardwalk Hall. However, he assured those on the line and around the world that he is prepared for the challenge when he said, “It’s certainly a difficult fight. Without a doubt, I will win. I have been preparing well because I know Broner is a great fighter and a super talent. It will be a great fight and the best man will emerge victorious. “
Antonio also mentioned that despite the rave reviews given and perhaps more fans gained after his gutsy performance against Jorge Linares, that a one punch knockout or high volume of punches thrown is not always in the cards for him.
“I’m a world champion and I don’t talk much on what I plan to do. There really is no need to concentrate on the output. It’s not ever easy for either one of us. My desire is much greater than anyone else. I’ll step into the ring and I’ll simply know what I have to do.”
An equally impressive addition to DeMarco’s resume was his forty four second destruction of John Molina two months ago in Oakland, California. Antonio was quick to call out Adrien Broner after his quick victory. He was however the first to admit to the initial shock over the outcome of the bout.
“I was realistic about it and I respect all of my opponents. I don’t look past anyone. It was a marvelous moment for me when I stopped him and I knew that I was a step closer to living my dream. This fight is very important for both of us.”
There has not been a fighter who has been able to best “The Problem” Broner, who himself readily admits that DeMarco will present a great challenge. Adrien commented, “He’s my best (opponent) so far, at least on paper. I know it’s the biggest of my career. After I win, I’ll go back to the drawing board. I’m ready and I will be able to show much more of my skills. My previous opponents appeared to have been downgraded because my skill level was so high.”
In regard to DeMarco’s wins over Linares and Molina, Broner added, “A knockout is always a punch away at any time. He was fighting good fighters, but he wasn’t fighting Adrien Broner. I am ready to do my best. When two great talents face off, one of them has to show the higher level of performance.”
The kid from Cincinnati not only possesses a high knockout ratio of 83%. He also employs a slick defensive style which perhaps however unfair to him nevertheless draws comparisons to that of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Adrien appreciates the likenesses that many seem to have noticed and relishes the idea of one day matching and even surpassing the accomplishments of Mayweather, Jr.
“I have big shoes to fill and I know it will be tough. It doesn’t bother me at all to be compared to him. I am who I am. I’m hoping to be greater than anyone who ever laced up a pair of boxing gloves. My defense may be similar to Floyd, but I’m totally different.”
Antonio DeMarco was brief yet not as complimentary when he noted, “With all due respect to Broner, he’s not Mayweather. We have worked very hard and we know what needs to be done in the ring. That’s why I am the champion.”
