By Andrew Rivera: Boxing in New Mexico USA has been kept going by promoter Lenny Fresquez who promoted former world champions Danny Romero Jr , Cruz Carbajal and the late Johnny Tapia. He is best known for taking female fighter Holly Holm to the top of women’s boxing.
Holm has retired from boxing and is now focusing on an MMA career , Fresquez has gone that way as well leaving the boxing scene as of now.
Holmes Promotions led by Pat Homes looks to pick up where Fresquez has left off, having promoted three cards in 2013 , Holmes will put on five cards in 2014 , the first coming on January 26th when local draw Tony Valdez takes on Jamie Gutierrez and popular Brandon Holmes battles Brandon Munoz, also featured on the card is Monica Lovato and Mike Alderete.
The shows will be held at Buffalo Thunder Casino outside Santa Fe , New Mexico.
The shows have the feeling of Las Vegas style atmosphere with large screens and video camera shots from the dressing room to give the crowd behind the scenes action.
Although Holmes looks to promote a card in Albuquerque this year as well, they have gained sold out crowds 60 miles from New Mexico’s biggest city, topping 1200 fans in the ball room.
"We’re just trying to give the fans a good show and give local fighters a chance to continue their careers." stated Holmes."We have open public workouts so the fans can get closer to the fighters, a friendly atmosphere."
Holmes’ top fighters in the stable of boxers is Tony Valdez, who is coming off a last round loss in a WBC to Felipe Castenada , a fight Valdez was winning on the scorecards but decided to brawl instead of coast to the win.
Brandon Holmes , son of Pat seems to have the goods, huge fan base, good looks and has done well in going 3-0 in his young career, hopefully as he steps it up each time out he could fight soon for Minor title.
Another fighter Holmes has been helping with is possibly New Mexico’s best hope for a world champion Fidel Maldonado Jr., who is coming off a big win over Luis Ramos this last November on Fox Television. Maldonado Jr is trained by his dad and looks to possibly have a February date with former world champion Stevie Forbes in San Antonio.
Holmes’ job is to help Maldonado’s marketing in Albuquerque. "I want to help Fidel with his marketing so more people will know about him, he has tools to be a world champion we just need to get his name out more."
Secondsout.com will be ringside to cover the January 25th card.
