Kavanagh Is Happy With New Camp

By David Boyle: Jamie Kavanagh extended his unbeaten record to, 14-0-1-(6), with an impressive fourth round tko win over Adolfo Landeros at the Home depot centre California last Friday (June 8).

This writer got the opportunity to ask Jamie a few questions before and after the fight about his new training camp and what he is looking for in the near future.

“ My new camp was good, a breathe of fresh air, it was time to get my feet wet somewhere else”, speaking on his recent move from the wildcard gym in California and Freddie Roach to his new boxing home in Indio California were he is now being trained by Joel Diaz.

“Timothy Bradley and Julio Diaz are just back training and Omar Figueroa will be here next week so I have loads of new sparring and people to work with that I am excited about”.

Asked about what his immediate plans are over the next year or two, Kavanagh said: “ Fight and Keep winning really, after this fight I am looking to be main event on shobox or fox network. Its one step at a time but that’s what I’m hearing, I’d love to pick up a belt by the end of the year”.

Jamie on leaving the wildcard Gym, “ I have learned a lot of things from the wildcard and I am very grateful, I have worked with a lot of champions and gained a lot of experience. But I wasn’t getting the best of attention, there are two many people and its hard to find space and concentrate, that is the main factor on leaving”.

On coming back to Ireland and fighting, “I would love to come back to Ireland and fight definitely, but there is just nothing big happening in Ireland. I know Frampton is there but apart from him there isn’t even any television and the sport can’t grow because of it. The amateur boxing is good but the professional boxing needs television”.

On his recent victory and the change in the corner, “ It was a big change, going back to the corner and listening to instructions from someone else, but it worked. I am looking forward to the future and what it holds. It can only get better but I feel the change is what I needed. More attention is what I am getting so I am happy and comfortable. It makes no difference being in LA or Indio because I am a million miles from home anyway.
