By David Boyle: Dundalk’s Michael Kelly is looking to put the bad experiences of his recent outing behind him when he enters the ring in his hometown of Dundalk in Ireland on July 12 against local rival Patrick Murphy.
Speaking about his upcoming fight, Kelly couldn’t hide his excitement. “I have known Patrick Murphy for years and sparred together a while back so I know it is going to be a good fight, ” said Kelly. “The fact that Patrick is travelling all the way back to Dundalk to fight me from Australia says it is going to be a good fight for the fans to see, Plus he is unbeaten and he wants to continue is streak”.
Kelly added: “ Myself I have a lot to prove following some defeats recently, however I have had distractions from training and different things happening so I am looking to get back to winning ways in this fight”.
Talking about his last fight against Kevin O’Hara, Kelly is very angry about a gloves fiasco that happened prior to the fight.
“Basically I was given gloves that were years old and not fit to fight in, my hands were numb and by the time I was in the ring I couldn’t feel my hands, so I was at a disadvantage from the dressing rooms”. No one was there is inspect the gloves and I feel that there needs to be something done about this sort of thing, my hands were like balloons for weeks after the fight”.
On getting a rematch with Kevin O’Hara, Kelly added: “ I only had three weeks to train for the fight and I was man enough to go into his backyard to fight him and with everything that happened that night it was still a close fight”. “ I wanted to fight him in the Dundalk show on the 12th July but he turned it down”, I just want a rematch on even ground, but I think he knows if I was properly prepared that the outcome of the fight would be completely different and he won’t take the fight”.
Kelly is excited to be sharing such a card in his hometown with the eagerly awaited rematch between Anthony Fitzgerald and Eamonn O’Kane on the card and other up and coming fighters.
“ It really is going to be a cracking night of fighting with Jamie Conlon, Hughie Fury, Philip Sutcliffe and many more on the card, I can’t wait for it and I hope we can get a big crowd down to the fairways hotel and show my home crowd what professional boxing is really like”.
