Regardless of whether or not it is a world title fight or a six rounder when two proud Mexican warriors face each other in the ring there is only one thing at stake-Pride. So when Abner Mares makes the first defence of his WBC featherweight title against former three weight world champion Jhonny Gonzalez at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on Saturday night he knows he faces dangerous and experienced opponent.
Mares,26-0-1-(14), has taken part in his fair share of ring wars and is prepared to go toe to toe once again but he also understands that he may just be better off fighting a smart against such a formidable opponent.
“The name of the game is to hit and not to get hit, I am a warrior but I always have that mentality, sometimes it depends on how the fight develops, but in this case we will try to make it an easier fight for myself since Gonzalez is a tough opponent and a warrior, his style is difficult,” said Mares, himself a three weight champ.
Mares added: “Mexico has great fighters, usually the fights between Mexicans are very exciting, the fight against Jhonny is very important, is going to be tough, like I said he has the experience but I am hungry to win,” Mares concluded.
