Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KO) will make the first defense of his WBC featherweight title against former champion Jhonny González (54-8, 46KO).
Three times world champion Mares will face Gonzalez, who has fought more than 60 times in his career, on August 24 in Carson, California, USA.
“This will be a very complicated fight, Jhonny is very tough . He’s a former champion, plus he’s Mexican like me and we both will fight our hearts out, "Abner insisted
“Jhonny is a fighter with a great technique and power. He has learned well from Nacho Beristain who’s a great master. He knows how to counter and punch hard so I feel he will be tougher than Daniel Ponce. But that won’t matter. I feel great, this is my time and nobody will beat me."
Mares is currently training in California under the supervision of Clemente Orozco.
“This will be a different fight, I will be facing a fighter with different style and I want to show the people that I can fight against any fighter no matter what their technique. You all will see a different Abner, a much more stronger and faster Abner."
