Williams Is Looking For A Solid First Title Defence

By Danny Coyne: Box Nation kicks off 2012 with a fantastic card at the spritual home of boxing, the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Friday (January 13).

The majority of the pugilistic entertainment is being supplied by The TRAD TKO stable, with five of the eight fights coming from either Johnny Eames or Jimmy & Mark Tibbs.

Top of the bill is British cruiserweight champion Leon “solid” Williams (9-3-0) from Streatham, who will now faces Shane McPhilbin(7-2-0) from Bulwell in his first title defence . Williams was due to fight Essex’s Tony Conquest, who had to pull out due to injury.

Speaking to Williams last week at the TRAD TKO gym, Williams said: “It will be a tough fight McPhilbin is tough he’s traded at heavyweight in the past, but I think I’ll have the answers. I have had a good camp over seven weeks for this fight, and I want to be looking at European or Commonwealth title bouts throughout 2012”.

The card also see’s fascinating support at heavyweight over eight rounds between former Commonwealth king Sam Sexton (14-2-0) from Norwich against teak tough former Southern area titleholder Larry Olubamiwo ( 10-2-0) from Hackney.

Speaking to the man they call “The War Machine”, Olubamiwo seemed upbeat with the task ahead. “I’ve been out for nearly a year, after the disappointment with John McDermott, I’ve regrouped got a new trainer in David Perirra, and I am working more on technique rather than explosive power. I am in the best shape of my life and I should come in at just under eighteen stone. Sam’s a great boxer it’s gonna be tough but I need to get past the like’s of sexton if I want to challenge for British titles,” said Olubamiwo.

Also on the card is Johnny Eames’s super featherweight charge, George Jupp from Belverdere (4-2-0) who looked impressive in the last prizefighter tournament only to be beaten by World rated Mongolian Choi Tesveenpurev in the semi’s. Jupp, who will be fighting in a 6x3’s against Dan Naylor of Gants Hill (1-6-0), should be in an easy night’s work for young George. “ two thousand and twelve is all about improving , getting out regularly and looking impressive I’m delighted I am now in the TV spotlight thanks To Queensbury” said the likeable Jupp.

Popular Irishman Peter McDonagh from Bermondsey by way of Galway, is another one of those to get rid of the journeyman “tag” (17-22-0), as he looks to get back to winning ways in 2012. “The Connemara Kid” has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his long career with wins against the like’s of Curtis Woodhouse, Michael Gomez and pushing the likes of Lenny Dawes in tough encounters. McDonagh faces Birmingham journeyman Jason Nesbitt (9-138-3).

Mark Tibbs’s debutant Charlie Hoy look’s set to impress in a 4x3’s encounter with Welshman Darren Pryce. Hoy 20, a successful amateur will be campaigning at flyweight and is definitely one to watch in 2012. “ I’m delighted to be with Mark Tibbs and am very grateful to Queensbury for signing me and getting exposure on Box Nation, this year is all about looking good," said the quietly spoken Hoy.

Trainer Johhny Eames’s super flyweight charge Michael Maguire from Peterborough makes a welcome return, after a short absence, when he face’s Najah Ali from Cardiff by way of Iraq (4-2-1), however, Maguire (6-0-0) should be too much for Ali. Maguire is setting his sights on a showdown with British Champion Lee Haskins later in the year.
