Ben Bentley dies at 81

May 3, 2001 - Chicago's famed sports announcer Ben Bentley, who covered some of boxing’s greatest bouts, has died at 81. Bentley died on Tuesday after suffering a stroke at his Chicago residence.

The great voice of Chicago boxing was also at the mike for the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" world middleweight title fight pitting Sugar Ray Robinson against Jake LaMotta in 1951.

All US fans of the old time fights should catch the ESPN Classic Profile tonight (May 3, check local times), featuring a documentary on the only undefeated heavyweight champion – the legendary Rocky Marciano.
