Hagler to attend Hall of Fame inductions

By Paul Upham: One of boxing's greatest middleweights, 1993 Hall of Fame inductee and former undisputed middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler will return to "Boxing's Hometown" for the 13th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 6-9.

Hagler captured the world middleweight title in 1980 with a third round TKO over Alan Minter. Over the next seven years, he successfully defended the crown 12 times with wins over Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, John Mugabi and Mustafa Hamsho.

Hagler lost the title on a split decision to fellow Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard in 1987 and promptly retired. Now an actor based in Italy, Hagler was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 1993.

"It's a tremendous honour for us to welcome Marvelous Marvin Hagler back to Canastota," said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. "He's a boxing legend."

The Hall of Fame Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events. New inductees to be honoured are three-division champion Jeff Fenech, welterweight king Pipino Cuevas, heavyweight champion Ingemar Johansson and British journalist Reg Gutteridge.

The Hall of Fame celebrations will be jam-packed in over four days with organisers now looking at ways to incorporate the Lewis-Tyson heavyweight clash on June 8 during the Induction Weekend into the programme of events.

"We will look into avenues in which we will be able to provide the opportunity to watch it, perhaps on a big screen," said Brophy.

The Induction week's events will commence on Thursday 6th June and will include a professional boxing show at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights on June 7.

There will be further activities on the Saturday with the weekend culminating with a Parade of Champions featuring over 50 world champions on Sunday June 8 commencing at 1pm, followed by the official Induction Ceremony in the Museum grounds at 2.30pm.

Over 50 boxing stars, including Carmen Basilio, Carlos Ortiz, Aaron Pryor, Jose Torres, Emile Griffith, Ruben Olivares, Gene Fullmer, Ken Norton, Jose Napoles, Alexis Arguello, Kid Gavilan, Ken Buchanan, Angelo Dundee, Lou Duva, George Benton, Billy Backus, Christy Martin, Tony DeMarco, Earnie Shavers, Jimmy Ellis, George Chuvalo, Terry Norris, Howard Davis, Jr., Marlon Starling, Ernie Terrell, Leon Spinks, Ron Lyle and Simon Brown, are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
