Billy Joe Saunders might fight Callum Smith next
Billy Joe Saunders picked up the WBO super middleweight title by winning a wide 12-round unanmious decision over virtual unknown Shefat Isufi (27-4-2, 20 KOs) at Lamex Stadium in Stevenage, England, Saturday night. The belt had recently become vacant when champion Gilberto Ramirez decided to move up to light heavyweight.
The scores of 120-108, 117-111, 118-110.
Saunders (28-0, 13 KOs), the former WBO middleweight champion, lost his belt last year when he tested positive for a banned substance a few weeks before facing Demetrius Andrade.
Tonight he was in complete control until Isufi landed a roundhouse right off the top of his noggin in round six. He wobbled into the ropes. Isufi tried to land something else, but Saunders used his cleverness to stay out of harms way. He was soon back in charge, cuffing Isufi with various shots. Saunders crusied the last few rounds, peppering his foe consistently.
