We have come a long way in women’s boxing and this impressive, if belated, progress is underlined by what has been labelled the greatest prizefight in female history.

Two-time Olympic champion Claressa Shields (the first American of either gender to nab consecutive Games gold medals) has been hugely influential in popularising the female side of the sport in the US. The talented Flint, Michigan fighter is just 24 but has already unified world titles at both middleweight and super-middle, in only eight paid bouts (all wins, two early).

Hammer, Kazakh born but for a long time the darling of German female boxing, is a veteran of 24 contests (all victories, 11 inside the distance) and has captured multiple world belts at middle and super-welter, so is naturally the smaller lady, though far more experienced as a pro. The Dortmund-based boxer brings her WBO belt to the party, while Shields boasts the other three major straps.

Date

The bout takes place on Saturday April 13.

Venue

Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City.

Rounds scheduled

10 two-minute rounds for the WBC, WBA, IBF & WBO Female middleweight titles.

TV Coverage

Coverage is on Showtime in the US and BoxNation in the UK, from 9.10pm ET & 6.10pm PT (2am Sunday UK).

Undercard highlights

An all-Michigan heavyweight 10-rounder sees 17-0 Jermaine Franklin (Saginaw, 25 years old) take on Detroit’s 24-1 Rydell Booker, who is 38 and returned from over 13 years out – after James Toney took his unbeaten record – in February 2018.

Continuing the heavyweight theme, former WBC champion Sam Peter continues his latest comeback at the age of 38 against short, chubby Mexican trialhorse Mario Heredia over a scheduled eight rounds.
