WBA lightweight champion Richard Abril (18-3-1, 8 KOs) made a successful title defence against previously unbeaten Sharif Bogere (23-1, 15 KOs) via 12 round unanimous decision at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday.
Abril, who was cut over the right eye from a clash of heads, was deducted a point from referee Russell Mora in round eight. Abril then began to land the cleaner shots. Bogere was deducted a point in the 12th and final round for head butting. The scores were 115-111, 116-110, 116-110.
On the undercard unbeaten featherweight Gary Russell Jr. (22-0, 13 KOs) scored a shutout 10 round unanimous decision over Vyacheslav Gusev (20-3, 5 KOs). The scores were 100-89 on all three judges cards. Gusev touched down in round three. Russell looked as though he may have been carrying an injury.
