Alexander Stops Purdy in 7

By Jason Pribila: Ringside in Atlantic City: Lee Purdy (20-4-1, 13KO) did not make the most of an opportunity that many questioned he deserved. A replacement for the injured Kell Brook, Purdy failed to make weight for the right to challenge for Devon Alexander’s IBF welterweight title.

Devon Alexander tested Purdy’s conditioning from the moment the opening bell echoed in an empty Boardwalk Hall by digging shots to Purdy’s rib cage. Purdy found success by landing counter rights, but Alexander answered with Tyson-esque double rights to the body into an uppercut.

Alexander continued to rip body shots and uppercuts to the enjoyment of the few thousand that made their way to their seats.

The fight fell into a pattern fight. Alexander was accumulating points, and Purdy was landing only shots to his own chest. Needing a knockout to win after only 7 rounds, Purdy’s corner pulled him out of harm and called the fight once he hit his stool.

The victory puts Alexander in the sweepstakes for a possible fight against Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr. or the winner of Malignaggi – Broner. The St. Louis native improved to (25-1, 14KO).

Undercard Results:

Shawn Porter bounced back from a shaky performance against Julio Diaz to completely out class Phil Lo Greco. Porter used great movement and a sneaky offense to frustrate Lo Greco. A knockdown in the last round was an exclamation point to a performance that will no doubt get Porter in another important televised bout soon. The judges’ scorecards illustrated what took place in the ring. Porter remained undefeated by scores of: 99-89, 100-88, 100-88

In the walkout out, Harry Khan (2-0, 1 KO), the younger brother of Amir, needed less than a minute to dispatch Vincente Medellin (0-6)
